Adnan Januzaj playing exact opposite for club as opposed to country

Belgium coach Marc Wilmots has revealed that he asks Manchester United attacking midfielder Adnan Januzaj to do the complete opposite of what he does for his club when playing for his country. The young Belgian played for his country last night in a 3-1 victory over Iceland, setting up the first goal of the match. Wilmots has stated that he has been less than impressed with the 19-year-old during United’s last two matches; a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City and a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace. He feels that ordering the player to play differently of his country is the best thing to do, but is it best to confuse such a young player, who could end up messing up his development so early into his career. The Manchester Evening News reported Wilmots as saying:

“I saw the two games he played with Antonio Valencia behind him.

“Van Gaal asked him to stand close to the sidelines, I ask exactly the opposite, that he comes inside.

“I want him to come on to his left foot from the right to give that ball or shoot at goal.”

I agree that Januzaj has not been all that impressive during the last two matches he has played in. Against Chelsea, he did cause Bratislava Ivanović some problems, yet he was still not playing the way he did last season. I guess you could say Januzaj was the best thing last season as after seeing David Moyes break the wrong kind of records, we may have thought Januzaj was better than he actually was, but he still have a lot of expectation placed on him as the talent is there waiting to be perfected. Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is still trying to find his best side, which is something that he has had to de because of injuries and form to some of his players, in the case of Januzaj, the confusion between the way he plays for club and country could be a factor for him not performing to the high standards required.

When Januzaj has played for Warren Joyce’s U21 side, he has been at the top of his game, but that is because he is miles ahead of players playing at that level, it is something that is good to see and builds confidence. I would love to see Januzaj turn into a player or Cristiano Ronaldo’s calibre, but there is a long road ahead of his at this moment in time. Ronaldo had a lot of polishing to do at the same age, and by the time he was 21, he was far more superior that his opposition, and he knew that. Januzaj could be exactly the same, providing he is played to his strengths.
