Anthony Martial to be given more chances before the end of the season

As the season draws near the end, Jose Mourinho has revealed that Frenchman Anthony Martial could play a big part as Manchester United look to cement second-place in the league and win the Emirates FA Cup against Chelsea this month.

The Frenchman had a very good start to his United career, scoring on his league debut against local rivals Liverpool, to make himself a firm favourite with the United faithful. But it hasn’t been all plain sailing since then. Last season he was strongly criticised by the United boss for his level of application in training and the fact that his form was inconsistent.

He hasn’t fared much better this season and has found games hard to come by this season, especially with the signing Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez, he has played 29 games but 12 of those have come from the bench, and even in the games he has started he has struggled to make an impact on games.

But with the World Cup around the corner, Martial needs to start playing games if he is to get into Didier Deschamps squad for the competition in Russia, and it seems as if Mourinho is going to give him a chance to prove himself in the last few games of the season.

It comes as Romelu Lukaku is seemingly going to be rested by Mourinho in the League games before the FA Cup final which gives Martial the chance to play in his favoured role down the middle.

The 22-year-old’s United future has been cast into doubt over recent months and moves to Serie A or back to his native France have been touted.

However, the Frenchman has always reiterated his desire to stay at Old Trafford but of course wants reassurances over his future from the club and whether or not he will get the game time, this move by Mourinho may be to sweeten the Frenchman before this summer’s transfer window, and possibly convince Martial to stay beyond this season.

It would be a shame to see such potential leave Old Trafford, were Martial to leave this summer, as with a bit of enthusiasm and the right coaching he can become one of the best players in the league if not Europe. The last few games of the Premier League season will be vital not only for Martial but for United as they look to cement the second spot in the league and with that automatic qualification for next season’s Champions League.

Were United to finish in the second spot the Martial would hopefully be a big part of the reason why, and if he does have a good end to the season, he might even force himself into the FA Cup final team against Chelsea on Saturday 19th May. The more important factor though is he gets back to playing and the form that saw him top the scoring charts for United in his first season, then and only then can we judge where his future may lie.
