Manchester United may have started a trend in August, by paying an astronomical amount for a Frenchman, and according to the Daily Star, the plans are to repeat this next summer, by signing Antoine Griezmann.
Normally players would come out to reject claims that they are being looked at by other clubs, but not Griezmann. Instead he has lit the fire, and openly talked about his admiration for the club that he supported as a boy.
“I always ask Paul Pogba about Manchester United. I think they are a huge club with a really good infrastructure. I ask Paul about some of the players, and if they’re really that good, or if Jose Mourinho is really that good.”
Griezmann knows that he is a world-class talent, so as a result it is inevitable that he will be linked with transfers to some of the best clubs in the world, like United and Paris St-Germain in his homeland. However, he does admit that he is currently happy at Atletico Madrid and doesn’t see himself moving from the Spanish capital. Yet, he does admit that a move to United would be “awesome” as it would give him the chance to play alongside his friend and international teammate Paul Pogba.
“You hear a lot of things [speculation] about Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain but right now I don’t see me moving to a new club. But It would be awesome to play alongside Paul one day.”
He did finish the interview on Sky Sports News HQ on a downer for United fans though as he admits that he’s “very happy” at Atletico and if he does leave Diego Simeone’s side then he would also have to think of his family as he is a father now.
“A future transfer depends on how I feel. Right now, I’m a father and moving to another city would the right thing. I’ll see If want to do something else in the future, but right now I’m very happy with Atletico Madrid and I still want to win trophies with this club.”
Griezmann is the exact sort of player that I think would benefit United and I would love to see him donning the kit next season. Jose Mourinho’s side have looked short of goals in recent weeks, failing to score in three consecutive games, before putting three past Swansea on Sunday. Griezmann has thrived playing as a second striker at Atletico, and he play a similar role behind Zlatan Ibrahimović if he does make the move to Manchester.
Griezmann has spoken of his admiration for Pogba and how he would like to play alongside him one day. Griezmann is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world, and if he signed for United it would only add to the quality of the side as he is such a potent attacking threat. A front four of Ibrahimović, Griezmann, Anthony Martial and Henrik Mkhitaryan would certainly be feared around England and Europe. That sort of attacking line with Pogba behind the attack and David De Gea in net would be a team that could challenge not only for the Premier League, but also the Champions League. This dream isn’t that far away either, just one more signing and we’d be there, and hey, it’d only set the club back around £80 million.
