During Barcelona forward Neymar’s trial for alleged corruption and fraud, his father, Neymar Sr made a stunning revelation, as he told the judge that there has been a bid made for his son, a massive £144 million bid. Who from, he did not say, although he has confirmed that the bid did not come from fierce rivals Real Madrid.
Despite this lack of confirmation, The Sun has reported that Manchester United are responsible for the potentially record-breaking bid. Aside from United, they also mentioned that Premier League rivals Manchester City and Chelsea are also monitoring the Brazilian’s situation. United seems like the only club to have made a bid, but City and Chelsea may also end up making an approach, should Neymar end up leaving Barcelona.
City’s recent announcement of their appointment of Bayern manager Pep Guardiola for the upcoming season could give them the upper hand, as Neymar was recently quoted as saying that he would love to work with Guardiola. When he was asked if there is one manager that he would like to work with, he answered:
“Yes, there is one: Guardiola is a guy who I really admire and who I would love to work with.”
However, he did also mention that he is still happy to stay with Barcelona, and that the two countries he would like to play in in the future are the USA and his homeland of Brazil. Playing in England doesn’t seem to be on the list, but that won’t get in the way of English giants to attempt a bid.
Spanish publication AS has now added a further twist in the tale. According to their report, the man giving the nod for United’s Neymar bid is none other than Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese coach, currently unemployed after his Chelsea sacking, has been linked with replacing current United manager Louis van Gaal in the summer, and has apparently given United the go-ahead to approach Barcelona for Neymar. AS has also mentioned that Neymar could be interested in the lure of playing in the Premier League and working with Mourinho.
Neymar’s Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez, however, has poured water on the speculation, as he has stated his conviction that Neymar will reject a move to the Premier League to stay with Barcelona. Speaking to El Mundo Deportivo, via the Daily Express, Suarez said:
“I am convinced that Neymar will stay. The club supports him and I am sure he will stay here for several years.”
This is a very interesting story. All that is known for sure at this stage is that Neymar’s father has come out to say that there has been a bid for his son. What he said exactly is unclear, as it was said in a Spanish court during Neymar’s trial. It is natural that United are currently linked, as they would be with every other big name rumour. But United’s spending power and their seemingly ongoing search for a massive superstar signing makes them a suitable club to link these stories to. Whatever the case, this story does not seem to be one that is going to fizzle out very soon, and all there is to do now is to wait for further development.
