Bayern Munich lower asking price for Portuguese midfielder

Manchester United seem to be given more of a chance to sign Portuguese midfielder Renato Sanches this summer with Bayern Munich reportedly looking to offload the player from their squad. Last summer, the Bundesliga champions signed the player from Benfica for an initial €35 million fee which was expected to have many add-ons attached with the player expected to reach the dizzy heights every world class footballer reaches. That just has not happened in his first season in Munich though. A few days ago now there were reports suggesting United could be in with a chance of signing the player Jose Mourinho missed out on last season after the club sacked Louis van Gaal and Bayern jumped in and signed Sanches.

The 19-year-old failed to break into the Munich side under Carlo Ancelotti, which will have come as a surprise to many with Sanches expected to be the next big thing coming out of Portugal, perhaps on the same road to success as William Carvalho who was the next big thing a few years back. Sanches started just nine matches for Ancelotti’s side, which in developmental terms, it was probably not enough to get the best out of the player. If United had signed the player, the same may have happened, but when you look at the injuries United sustained in the midfield area last season, you could see Sanches being given a chance in the Premier League, the UEFA Europa League and quite possibly in the Emirates FA Cup – but hindsight is great isn’t it?

In May, German news source Bild suggested the Bavarian club would sell the player this summer if they received the €35 million spent on the player a year ago, now though, it is being reported by German magazine Kicker, relayed by The Metro, that Bayern would let the player leave the Allianz Arena for €26 million, which when you consider the player’s potential, age and the fact transfer fees are reaching obscene levels, it could demonstrate a good deal for United, if Mourinho still retains an interest in the Sanches. This summer, the midfield is something United are looking to strengthen with the departures of both Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger early in 2017, meaning United were left with Ander Herrera, Michael Carrick, Paul Pogba, and Marouane Fellaini as experienced players.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah could also be seen as a contender to play in the midfield, but his defensive attributes could see him being utilised as a right-back, the position he has played under Louis van Gaal for the Old Trafford club, or even as a central defender, a position he has played in at times during his coaching in the club’s Academy. Saying that six midfielders would be good for United, if all of the names mentioned remain at the club of course, as United will play a similar number of matches this season, from the start of the season at least, which could see United need extra reinforcements. At this moment in time, Nemanja Matic and Fabinho are the two players linked to United, with Sanches being another option although not firmly linked.
