Manchester United travel to Watford on Sunday hoping to return to winning ways following two disappointing defeats within a week. The Reds were defeated in the Manchester derby last weekend before losing their Europa League opener against Feyenoord on Thursday evening. United won 2-1 in the corresponding fixture last season and have an excellent record against Sunday’s opponents having won ten in a row against the Hornet’s. Let’s take a look at some of the odds floating about ahead of Sunday’s match-up.
The match odds courtesy of William Hill* are as follows:
Watford win – 5/1
Draw – 13/5
Manchester United win – 8/13
Mourinho’s men are a very short price to pick up the victory against Watford on Sunday, especially given their performances of late. A £10.00 bet on the Reds returns just £16.15 including your stake.
Match Result and Both Teams to Score
Watford – 15/2
Draw – 7/2
Manchester United – 5/2
The Reds have found goals hard to come by of late, having nicked a last-minute winner against Hull City last month to win 1-0, United then lost 2-1 against rivals Manchester City before firing a blank in the 1-0 defeat to Feyenoord earlier this week. One player who does know where the net is Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the joint top scorer in the Premier League (4) will be looking to add to his tally against Watford on Sunday. The big Swede is the favourite among the goalscorer markets. He is 21/20 to score anytime and 10/3 to open the scoring.
One man who is yet to open his account for the campaign is Memphis Depay. The Dutchman started up top in the corresponding fixture last season and opened the scoring with a sweetly struck volley 10 minutes in. He is yet to start a game under Mourinho and will more than likely have to score coming off the bench as I can’t see him starting this one. He’s 3/1 to score anytime and 9/1 to score first.
Watford skipper Troy Deeney had a very eventful game during this fixture last term. The striker thought he salvaged his side a draw with a thumping penalty in the final few minutes however then turned the ball into his own net just minutes later giving United all three points. The Englishman is 14/5 to score anytime and 9/1 to net first.
Oh, and just in case you’re wondering, an anytime own goal is price at a reasonable 7/1, not bad!
The Reds narrowly saw off Watford at Old Trafford earlier this year thanks to a late Juan Mata free-kick. You can back the same 1-0 scoreline at 6/1. Fancy United to replicate the scoreline from this fixture last season? 7/1 says Mourinho’s men come away from Vicarage Road with a 2-1 win. You have to go back to 1986 to find the last Watford victory over Manchester United. The Reds have won ten on the bounce since then. The Hornet’s won 1-0 that day, odds of 14/1 to repeat the success from 30 years ago on Sunday!
Let’s take a look at some of William Hill’s enhanced odds ahead of Sunday’s lunchtime kick-off:
- Odion Ighalo to score and Watford to win – 11/1
- Zlatan Ibrahimovic to score and Man Utd to win – 7/4
- Troy Deeney to score, Watford to win 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1 – 20/1
- Wayne Rooney to score, Man Utd to win 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1 – 8/1
Bet of the Day
The Reds can’t afford to drop points on Sunday, given the starts that Manchester City and Chelsea have made as well as going into this game on the back of two defeats. I’m going for a scrappy 2-1 win for United, the same scoreline from this fixture last season at 7/1. A £10.00 bet returns £80.00 including stake with William Hill.
