Manchester United legend Bryan Robson believes that Sergio Agüero will be the main man in attack for City and the result of the derby is dependent on how well United’s defence copes with him. Louis Van Gaal’s leaky defence has managed to keep only two clean sheets in the Barclays Premier League so far, conceding 13 goals in nine matches. For the trip to Manchester City on Sunday, Van Gaal is most likely to name an unchanged back four for the first time, with Chris Smalling set to partner Marcos Rojo at centre back again, with Rafael da Silva and Luke Shaw as full backs. But it is Rojo’s compatriot Agüero who Robson is concerned about. Speaking to MUTV, Robson said:
“I think the defenders are going to have to do really well against Agüero, if he is fit – that would be a plus if he is out..
“[Edin] Džeko is a real handful and [David] Silva, I have been told he is probably not going to play – that is also a plus. So if we can defend really well, it has been shown that City concede goals.
“From being a really top team and being champions, they can concede goals and we have got the strikers who can do that. So I think, instead of saying it is a midfield battle, I think it is how these defenders can cope with the forwards.”
United lost 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium last season and have also lost their last three games against City in the Barclays Premier League. But City come into the derby without a win in their last three games and low on confidence after a loss in their last game against Newcastle in the Capital One Cup.
Robson doesn’t expect the fixture to be as one-sided as it was when David Moyes was United’s manager last season. The former club captain continued by saying:
“I don’t think it is going to be a run-away for City like it has been for the last couple of games.
“As long as the lads stand up and have a bit of fight and spirit, because they are going to have to stand up to City, then I think we can take a point from the game.”
Agüero has already scored nine goals in nine appearances this season but the injury to David Silva will hurt City a lot. Bereft of confidence and having an unsettled lineup, City will require all their stars to turn up for this game to register a win against United, who will be hoping to carry on their recent good form. Hopefully United’s defence manage to keep a clean sheet in this game as we definitely have the firepower to trouble City.
