Callum Gribbin set to miss the UEFA Youth League confirms Ricky Sbragia

Manchester United Reserves lose Callum Gribbin to injury for Friday’s encounter with Tottenham Hotspur U23’s and he is also expected to miss the UEFA Youth League which starts next month. He already lost the previous two matches in the Premier League 2 where the Reserves faced Leicester and Swansea. It was obvious that a bright spark was missing on the side and creativity lacked as we only saw long runs from the left coming from Demetri Mitchell while it seemed that the right-wing was asleep. The team was depended on what Mitchell was going to do while there were good combinations from Josh Bohui and Indy Boonen.

Boonen has just recently joined the U23’s being promoted from the U18’s but still needs work to do and a player like Gribbin who has already played with the Reserves in the regular season, would have been helpful to Indy Boonen who scored an important goal on Monday night.  Meanwhile, Gribbin became key with some outstanding performances when on tour this pre-season and let’s not forget that all went well for him in the Dallas Cup as well where he scored there twice.

With things still not in the right order the Sbragia has lost Gribbin in a bad moment when he has been trying to consolidate the team even more. The manager has made a few changes and has been experimenting with Riley, giving him a chance to play as a right-wing, something that hasn’t been productive so far.

It was the manager who announced Gribbin’s injury speaking for the club’s website:

“We are hugely disappointed to lose Callum with the injury but know that he will come back stronger once his recovery is complete.”

Apparently, the player got himself injured in training and the manager is gutted as Gribbin was one of the outstanding players during preseason and Sbragia was helpful that the player would do great in the regular season as well. It feels like last season’s scenario with Gribbin getting injured at the start of the U18’s season and coming back after a few weeks.

“These things can happen at any moment and it was just an accident where he went over on his ankle in training. Once he was assessed, we realised the damage and it is really unfortunate for him and the squad, after a great pre-season.”

Right now Sbragia doesn’t have a date when the player may return but his recovery is incredibly important so everything is set to give him support and get help whenever he is ready to return to the football pitch.

“We don’t want to put a timeframe on his comeback but he has the best possible support network around him and will get back into the rhythm once he is back on the training pitch.”

What’s next for the Reserves, a hard game against Tottenham on Friday night, however getting the three points is key in the title chase with United’s rivals having started the new season in the perfect true. It’s a major blast that we won’t get to see Gribbin on the pitch but there’s still hope as Zak Dearnley may soon return and Boonen is doing well. Plenty of quality in the Reserves who may expect the return of its finest strikers, James Wilson who has not been involved in the two games. It remains unclear whether he may leave on loan or he is not ready to return yet in action for the season. He will be a great addition, but it’s Jose Mourinho and Ricky Sbragia who will have the last word on him.
