Can Jose Mourinho lead Manchester United to a title this season?

Jose Mourinho has yet to take charge of a game as Manchester United manager, but will on Saturday as United take on Wigan Athletic at DW Stadium. The appointment of Mourinho appears to be inspiring to many fans, and even United legend Andy Cole expressed his belief that the Portuguese manager could take United back to the top of the Premier League table to capture the twenty-first title. Cole’s positive outlook towards Mourinho and fancies the chances of a league title in the upcoming season.

“If Jose Mourinho comes to Man United and wins [the Premier League] in the first season I think that would be like Dynamo the magician.

“It would be fantastic. He’s under no illusions how tough it’s going to be to come to Man United and try and win the Premier League at the first attempt.

“Fingers crossed we have a better season than we did last season.”

United’s new manager brings hope after three years without the title and another season without Champions League football. Mourinho has been successful in his first seasons at many of his clubs. With FC Porto, Mourinho won the league title in his first season with the club, with Chelsea the same outcome occurred, and for a third time with Inter Milan in Serie A. Mourinho is not limited to domestic titles, winning the Champions League with Porto, Inter, Chelsea, and Real Madrid. For Cole, a Champions League winner with United, the competition is important and the former striker says that clinching a berth into the tournament is essential for the club.

“Finishing in the top four has got to be a must. New manager and new players as well, it should be a good season.”

Mourinho is quick to work at United bringing in three signings before summer training even began. The addition of Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan has earned praise for the manager and brings hope to United supporters. United fans could see Bailly and Mkhitaryan in a game on Saturday but will have to wait to see Ibrahimovic. United travel to China following the match in Wigan, which will be the first chance United fans will see the team take shape. The final tune-up match for the regular season will be against Leicester City at Wembley Stadium in the Community Shield. Cole values the preseason matches but wants the games to act as a guide for the club rather than a chance to run up scores against opponents.

“It’s pre-season – you’ve got to get up to speed when it comes to playing in good competition games, that’s the test you want.

“You don’t want to be winning games 10-0 in pre-season. You want a good stern test and they’ll get that.”

The Premier League continues to amaze with miracle runs made by Leicester and the usual drama that the most competitive league in the world brings. Mourinho has what it takes to win in the Premier League and with United he can do it once again. It is only his first season at Old Trafford, but with the right signings and a belief from his players, United could get themselves another title. The pressure on Mourinho’s shoulders will be immense as United attempt to defend the FA Cup, get back into Champions League, and possibly make a run for the title. Nothing is impossible in the top flight of English football and when Mourinho is in charge, an unmatched confidence is created. Now that there are more world-class managers in the league from Antonio Conte at Chelsea to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, competition will be fierce, but nothing seems to scare Mourinho. He has the nickname “The Special One,” and at United, it will certainly take a special season for a Premier League title to return to the Theatre of Dreams.
