Chevrolet reportedly want to help Manchester United bring Cristiano Ronaldo home

For the best part of a month now, Manchester United have been linked with the return of Cristiano Ronaldo after he suggested that his career at Real Madrid was over after winning a fourth UEFA Champions League trophy in the last five years. We have seen this before, many times, whereby the player has seemingly welcomed a return to the Theatre of Dreams, only to sign a new lucrative contract with Real Madrid, which many had suggested the player had used his former club to get monetary benefits, whether that is the case or not.

This summer, journalists have suggested that it is an ‘irreversible decision’ by the Portugal international who has taken the FIFA World Cup by storm, scoring a hat-trick against Spain in their opening World Cup match, a 3-3 draw, also scoring against Morocco, making it four goals in two matches, earning his country a place in the knockout stages of the tournament, with a game to play, against Iran on Monday. Ronaldo’s form has many reminiscing about his time at United and what could become if he does leave the Santiago Bernabeu.

On Friday, Spanish website El Gol Digital, which was reported by The Express, suggested that United’s official shirt sponsor, Chevrolet, wanted to help make the club’s supporters dreams a reality. We have also heard something like this before with former shirt manufacturer Nike wanting to do the same five years ago, just after the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, something which the club is just starting to get over now, under the management of Jose Mourinho.

The 33-year-old, who is suggested to have a physique of a 23-year-old, having just 7% of body fat, with the player looking after his body, which has prolonged his career massively. The form shown in the World Cup so far and the latter half of Real Madrid’s season shows just what Cristiano Ronaldo is capable of. Could that magic arrive back at Manchester United this summer with the player taking the Premier League by storm, nine years after leaving the club for Real Madrid in the £80 million transfer the summer after he won the first of five Champions League titles?

United manager Jose Mourinho has previously suggested that both he and United would be interested if Ronaldo wanted to make that return home and Chevrolet is apparently interested in helping that happen. It is currently suggested that Ronaldo would cost a fee similar to that Paris Saint-Germain paid for Neymar last summer, with the Brazilian reportedly keen on a move to the Santiago Bernabeu with PSG interested in Eden Hazard, which all sounds a bit convenient.

The commercial benefits for Chevrolet, United, Ronaldo, and even Nike would be massive if the player did make a return to United, which is something I highly doubt after being in this position many times before, wondering if this was the time Ronaldo actually came home. Of course, I would welcome him back, like many United supporters, especially after the form he has shown in the World Cup, similarly to the form he showed at the end of the past season.

Ronaldo’s mother, Dolores Aveiro, was recently asked about his son signing for PSG this summer, which is another club who could afford the Portuguese international, although Financial Fair Play could see them unable to offer a lucrative contract for Ronaldo, being that they paid for Neymar last summer and also have a loan deal, for Kylian Mbappe, of which they would need to pay for this summer, amongst other transfers the club are interested in this summer. Ronaldo’s mother, keeping hopes and dreams alive, reportedly said:

“I like Paris. I come every now and again. The last time was when my son received the Ballon d’Or. It was a great honour. When I arrived I was treated well by everyone. Convince Cristiano to sign for PSG? To be honest, it wouldn’t annoy me [if he did]. But I would prefer him to return to Manchester United.”

There is a lot of time before this rumour can grow legs but many United supporters would be interested in Ronaldo coming home, despite it being five years too late and the fact the player is not getting any younger. If his body age was to be believed, that is exactly what seems to be happening with the player 10 years younger, which may see him being able to play at the highest level for a few more years yet. Ronaldo will know what he wants, whether that is Madrid, Manchester, Paris or somewhere else, I am sure we will find out after his World Cup exploits have finished.

However, it does not look like that is going to be any time soon with Portugal into the knockout stages of the tournament with one group game remaining and with the form he had shown in the European Championships in France two years ago, Portugal winning the tournament, there is a possibility that Portugal could do what France did in 2010, winning the FIFA World Cup whilst being the holders of the European Championships, winning in 2008, also retaining the title in 2012, but not able to do so in the 2014 World Cup, with Germany winning it in Brazil.
