Could Carrick Be Uniteds Defensive Saviour?

Unsatisfactory additions in the summer, and the age-old curse of injuries and suspensions have left United’s defence depleted to say the least. The situation could well end up meaning Michael Carrick will be used in a role he has played only once or twice previously.

The Mail Online believes this could be the case. Though currently injured, Carrick is close to a return and could well find himself shunted further down the field in a quest to add some solidarity to United’s back line. Having finally undertaken training at Carrington following his ankle injury, it is believed he and Louis van Gaal have already discussed the possibility of Carrick moving back – that possibility will surely now be stronger than ever. Jonny Evans is believed to be out for four weeks after limping off on Sunday, Phil Jones is still a couple of weeks away after sustaining an injury with England, and Tyler Blackett is suspended following his sending off at the weekend.

Carrick does have the experience, Sir Alex Ferguson used him as a stand in during his last season, but to mixed reviews. In spite of that, Carrick’s experience could well paper over the cracks left by the lack of World Class recruits acquired in that area during the transfer window.

Though the 33-year-old would prefer to play in midfield, but competition is now rife in that area, and certainly after Daley Blinds impressive start in the anchor role many believe Carrick would find it difficult to earn his place back. Following the capitulation at the King Power Stadium on Sunday, the strength of the microscope has increased, along with the urgency needed to find suitable replacement for those out injured and Carrick might well prove to be the answer.

It isn’t ideal. But it is an eye opener to those in charge that the 3 defensive players (Blind included) bought in over the summer weren’t enough. Marcos Rojo will most likely get the nod in Centre Half, Luke Shaw at Left Back and Daley Blind will presumably stay in the Defensive Midfield role on Saturday, but that is still only 3 and none that would be considered World Class by any stretch of the imagination.
