Manchester United have been given a boost with the highly rated Dutch winger Memphis Depay’s availability from PSV Eindhoven. The Dutch club would let the player leave if a bid of £18 million, which is their asking price, is met. This could happen in the January transfer window or in the Summer. Depay had signed a new deal in the summer to stay after months of speculation linking the player Manchester United and numerous other top clubs. It was best for the player in order to keep him grounded and not get ahead of himself, like some players do when they sign for bigger clubs. I believe Depay to be a decent up and coming player and the fact that Louis van Gaal gave him a chance in the FIFA World Cup in the summer, where he scored twice against Australia and Chile, suggests that he rates the player.
United have problems on the wing this season with record signing Angel Di Maria playing there, despite him being better going through the middle of the pitch. Ashley Young, who put in some good performances in pre season has been injured for most of the season so far and Antonio Valencia has been nothing but predictable and slow on the wing and has at times filled in for the injured Rafael da Silva at right-back. The 20-year-old Dutch winger has proven he can be the player that would be needed at Old Trafford. He has flair, speed, ability and everything else in his locker. He has been part of the PSV Eindhoven first team for a while; this is his fourth season. In that time he has made 97 appearances in all competitions, scoring 36 goals, which is a good stat for the young winger.
If Louis van Gaal is interested in signing his fellow countryman, which I feel would be of benefit to both club and country, he would be signing a player that would come to the club ready to stake his claim with bags of potential. Wingers at United have been pretty inconsistent at times with Nani, Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia and even Wilfried Zaha struggling at time. Valencia has signed a new contract to keep him at the Old Trafford club, but he has an extra worth in that he can cover at right-back, as if Rafael da Silva is ever injured or suspended, there is literally no cover, unless a player like Saidy Janko is fast-tracked into the first team.
PSV Eindhoven manager Phillip Cocu added weight to the rumours surrounding the 20-year-old. He spoke to Helden, saying:
“Of course Memphis will be sold, you can’t stop that but it’s okay.
“It’s great you can build up a player like him, who breaks through, succeeds at PSV then leaves the club when he’s ready for a bigger step. That’s great.
“I really thought it would be the best for him if he stayed here with us. It’s important for him to play around fifty matches in a season before he makes the next step.
“Nothing else makes you a better player than a lot of games. He can become way better, he’s so explosive.”
Cocu’s words describe Depay as the player that would excite Old Trafford. United do have Adnan Januzaj, who is a talented young player, but there is a lot to learn, which would be the same as Depay. There is not really a lot of availability of established world-class wingers right now, with United linked to may in the summer, all of whom are still with their clubs. The best way for United to strengthen their side is to continue to develop youth, whether it be players from the Academy, such as Jesse Lingard or players like Depay. Many will suggest that Wilfried Zaha still has a future at the club, I believe he does, but I am not sure he will be in the managers plans as a winger, seeing as he was turned into a striker during pre season, but that is when the 3-5-2 variation formation, so everything could have changed seeing as that formation is seldom used at the moment.
Would you like to see Depay sign for Manchester United in the future, or do you feel that he is not quite United standard, or feel that there are much more important areas to fill first?
