De Gea mentions Fabregas & earning his spot for Spain

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has spoken to the Spanish media about his time to far in the senior Spain squad ahead of this summers FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The Player of the Year for United also spoke about the current speculation linking Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas to the Old Trafford club this summer, even though there are reports suggesting that new manager Louis van Gaal is not interested in the Spanish midfielder, but even clearer so, it suggest that nobody has a clue what United’s plans are this summer.

De Gea, who had a good season with United, despite the clubs under achievement at all levels, he was one of the few players that can hold his head up high as he did try and make a difference. Without the young Spaniard in goal, it could have been so much worse for United. It is a good end to the season for him though, with him being called up to the senior Spain squad, earning a place in the squad heading to the World Cup in Brazil, which I expect him to do with only three goalkeepers called up to the squad with the injury to Víctor Valdés making way for De Gea to earn his place. Speaking about the future of Fabregas, De Gea told La Sexta:

“I’ve tried to convince Cesc to join United but it’s difficult. He feels great at Barca, it’s his home.”

De Gea could be utilised for the friendly with Bolivia on Friday evening which will be played at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán in Seville. The United goalkeeper, who has yet to be capped fir the senior side should be given the chance to prove himself ahead of a further friendly against El Salvador in Maryland the week before the World Cup starts in Brazil. Speaking about the friendly against Bolivia, De Gea said:

“We don’t know who’s going to play against Bolivia, but we have to be ready in case we get the nod. I’m raring to make my debut. There’s a lot of competition in goal, but I’m enjoying myself and pushing myself to the max in training.

“There’s a lot of speculation about who will go to Brazil and who won’t. A few players are carrying fitness issues and we just have to wait for the gaffer to make his decision: it’s as simple as that.”

No matter what happens, this summer will be great for the young United goalkeeper. He will earn experience in the biggest tournament, which will only help ready him for the new season and the rest of his career, as by the time of the next World Cup tournament in 2016 in Russia, I would expect De Gea to have already cemented his position as Spain’s number one goalkeeper.
