Dennis Man linked to Manchester United by Steaua Bucuresti owner Gigi Bacali

Manchester United have been linked to 19-year-old Romanian striker Dennis Man. Jose Mourinho is currently on holiday ahead of the FIFA World Cup in Russia where he will be a pundit on Russian television. During his time off as United’s manager, Mourinho has been watching a lot of international football. He travelled to Romania to see the national team take on Finland on Tuesday evening, with Romania winning 2-0. Mourinho previously watched Austria beat Germany last week.

Steaua București owner Gigi Bacali has claimed, on Romanian television, that there is interest from a Premier League club for one of his players, Dennis Man, a player who came on in the 64th minute for Romania in their victory over Finland. Mourinho going anywhere, especially during a transfer window is always going to be big news and that is exactly what this has become, in Romania anyway.

Dennis Man, a 19-year-old striker for Romania and Steaua București could well be a player that Mourinho wanted to cast his eye over, at least that is what the reports would want you to think. Mourinho could just be showing his love for football. Obviously, when watching Austria and Germany last week, one of the teams, Germany, will be involved in the World Cup this summer but neither Romania or Finland will be, which is where you have to think about why Mourinho was there – a love of football or a personal scouting mission?

Man has been linked with an English club before, having a trial at Manchester City in 2010, playing against Nottingham Forest whilst he was still on the books of UTA Arad. The 19-year-old played 39 times for the senior team, scoring 16 goals in two seasons, one being a partial season as he was transferred to Steaua II București. Man signed a one year contract with the option of a further five years to be added at the end of the season. A release clause of €50 million was set as part of that contract.

Man played 15 times, scoring six goals for Steaua’s reserve team, promptly being promoted to the senior team that same season (2016/17), where he played nine times, scoring one goal. Last season, Man playing solely in the senior side, making 47 appearances in all competitions, scoring 12 goals. Man has played twice for Romania, both appearances in 2018, not scoring a single goal in his early international career. At U19 and U21 levels for Romania, Man has played six times in total, scoring three goals.

With the impending signing of Diogo Dalot, with reports of him passing his medical at the Old Trafford club on Tuesday, it suggests that Mourinho is targeting players who he feels will help set a foundation at the club for many years to come. Man, if the Portuguese manager is interested in him, could be another under-the-radar signing this summer, if anything materialises. Steaua owner, Bacali was quoted by Sport.ro, which was translated by Sport Witness, as saying:

“I do not know why Mourinho came to Romania, but I know that Manchester, two months ago, was interested in Man and we asked about €30m. That’s what I ask. When they’re not for sale, I ask very much. I want to take a lot more money, not €30m. I do not want to sell him for 3, 5, 10. I want 30 to make his price, so I could get 60, 100, million.”

Sport Witness stated in their article that they did not have anyone who spoke Romanian but pointed people in the direction of Emanuel Rosu, is apparently Romania’s go-to guy for anything to do with football an on his personal Twitter account, his version of the comments by Bacali is pretty similar. This suggests that Bacali has claimed that Manchester United are interested in Man, which may be something or nothing. You can read the tweet below, make of it what you will.

Man may not be ready for a club like United, having very little first team experience and not yet tested either internationally or on the big stage but the same was thought about Dalot, who is close to completing his transfer to United. Mourinho was reportedly seeking a forward to take the pressure off Romelu Lukaku this summer with Marko Arnautovic and Mario Mandzukic both linked to the Theatre of Dreams. Whilst both players are experienced and Man is not, it would be silly to suggest that the 19-year-old was another option.
