Diogo Dalot close to becoming a Manchester United player after breakthrough with Porto over the weekend

Manchester United are reportedly close to securing the signing of FC Porto defender Diogo Dalot after reaching an apparent agreement with the Portuguese club. The Manchester Evening News suggest the player could sign for the Old Trafford club this week. Last week it was reported that United had activated €20 million release clause in the player’s contract, but nothing was confirmed by Dalot’s club, so that seems to have been the media jumping to conclusions.

However, it is stated that a breakthrough was made during the weekend in the latest round of negotiations and both club now have the smaller details to finalise. The release clause in Dalot’s contract would work out to £17.5 million but it is expected that the agreement is a bit more than this. It was suggested over the weekend that to allow Dalot to leave the club with nobody there harbouring any ill feelings towards him, it was asked of United to pay a bit more to ensure the club do not lose out financially. This could be where the agreement lies.

Also, it is suggested that the clause does not even become active until after the 30th June this year, so United are, according to the Manchester Evening News, offering £19 million to sign the 19-year-old before the clause becomes available as eight other clubs seem to hold an interest in him right now. This would benefit both United and Porto, getting the deal done now for United and Porto receiving a bit more money for the player. However, the other clubs could be in negotiation with the Porto too, which could complicate the matter.

Dalot is actually in the United Kingdom, visiting his sister, Mariana, in London. The Manchester Evening News and The Mirror have confirmed this, although the latter got the news from the former, being part of the same company, Mirror Trinity. However, the 19-year-old is not expected to travel up to Manchester until later in the week, at the earliest, if a deal is reached. United’s Aon Training Complex is the only training base in the country which is fitted out not only to conclude deals for players but to conduct full medicals also.

Dalot missed the end of the season for Porto, in which they won the league title. He was sidelined with a knee injury which would enable him to start pre-season around the 15th July 2018, just in time for United’s pre-season tour of the United States of America where they will face Club America and San Jose Earthquakes, ahead of their participation in the International Champions Cup, facing AC Milan, Liverpool, and Real Madrid.

United are aware of Dalot’s injury, including the medical reports about his injury and the club will subject the player to a typical examination as soon as they are able to, assessing the injury themselves and giving him a prognosis for when he will be fit enough to return to the game he has started his career in. With Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred currently undergoing his medical with United this afternoon, Dalot could be the second player into the club, just over a week after news first broke about United’s interest in the teenager.
