Don’t worry lads, Angel Gomes isn’t going anywhere!

Manchester United have always been spoilt with exciting and budding talent coming through their academy and that is one of the things that sets them apart as a football club. However, once in a while, comes a talent, which is too bright to not get over-excited about. There is always a huge build up whenever there is a youngster in the ranks who everyone has been excited about, be it Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney or David Beckham. The latest teenage sensation to develop at the Carrington has not even played the highest academy level football yet, but most of the United supporters cannot stop gushing about him already.

Angel Gomes, who has only turned 16 earlier this year, is one of the most sought after player at the academy today and the head of the academy, too, was frank enough to admit their high expectations of him.

“It’s ridiculous. I look at the kids and they’re miles better than I was at their age – technically. We’ve got some unbelievable players. Angel Gomes is a young talented player we’ve massive hopes for.”

He is the England U16 captain who has been creating ripples in the footballing world by his tremendous display at both club and international level, especially this season. He has been involved in 12 goals, scoring six of them himself, in his nine starts for the U18’s so far this season. With the footballing fans getting awe-struck by the talent, it was only natural that the rival clubs will come looking for any opportunity to snatch up the prodigal youngster from United. Similar reports surfaced a few weeks back when Barcelona were said to be keeping tabs on the individual. Honestly, it is highly expected that a club of Barcelona’s stature will keep tabs on interesting youngsters around Europe. But the way this news was reported, it got some supporters worried and understandably so.

Obviously, anyone would be gutted to see the youngster leave, only to see him develop in to a world class player at another club. However, all these fans can relax a little as Gomes’ father has cleared the air about the Barcelona interest. He did not deny these reports but expressed Gomes’ dream of playing for United’s first team.

“The important thing is that Angel continues to have all this pleasure in playing football.

“I don’t deny that many clubs ask me about him, but that’s what he always says… the next dream is to play for Manchester United’s first team, a club where he has been growing.”

There is a lot going for the young players at the moment and the supporters can only hope that it stays that way for Gomes. The emergence of the likes of Andreas Pereira, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Marcus Rashford has been refreshing and exciting for the supporters all around the globe. Gomes, too, in spite of being too young still, seems to be first team quality. With the way he is going, it will be interesting to see if he makes the next natural step of playing for the U23’s, already this season. The next couple of seasons will be the most crucial for him in terms of development but also with respect to injuries. A little luck with injuries and continued development, will see the U-16 England captain hovering around the United First team squad in two to three time. With the Barcelona reports put to rest, its interesting and exciting times ahead!
