Netherlands and Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben revealed after his countries 3-0 victory over FIFA World Cup host nation Brazil in Saturday nights third place play off that Louis van Gaal, who will assume responsibility of Manchester United this week told him that there was “always a spot for him” at Old Trafford. A reported from Dutch television station NOS asked him, according to The Mirror:
“He said that, right? Yes.”
The Bayern Munich winger was very quick an answer, saying:
“I am very happy where I am now. I told [Louis van Gaal] that.”
Speculation has been rife this summer that Van Gaal would be taking at least one of the squad members he selected for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where they finished as the third placed team, just four years after finishing as runners-up, which is not all that bad. Van Gaal showed his qualities as a manager, which have got United supporters hungry for this coming season, something that we all hope brings that fear factor back to the Old Trafford club. Arjen Robben was one of the first players linked to United, even before the World Cup, which suggested a £25 million fee would be paid to the Bavarian club.
Many United supporters do not want to see Robben in a United shirt. He had the chance to sign for United but chose Chelsea 10 years ago instead and was considered a player to have flopped in the Barclays Premier League. He was sold to Real Madrid just three years later, making the move to Munich just two-years after that, a club where he became one of the best wingers in Europe helping them to the UEFA Champions League in 2013 which completed a historic treble for the Bundesliga giants. Of course, United were right to be looking at established players at the start of the summer, but Robben just was not the one that everyone wanted.
Now the player himself has ended all speculation of a move away from the German giants, I guess the newspapers will be casting more speculation over other players who are currently linked with the Old Trafford club, and most probably coming up with more links to players that have not been linked as yet, if there is in fact many in that position. Manchester United and Louis van Gaal know who they want to buy this summer. Juventus’ Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal is still hotly linked, depending in which news sources you believe, as is Real Madrid’s Argentinian winger Ángel di María and Borussia Dortmund’s German defender Mats Hummels. United surely will pull one of those players out of the bag this summer, or is that just me hoping?
