Eric Dier has heart set on Manchester United move but Spurs will not sell…

Manchester United target, at least reportedly, Eric Dier has his heart set on a move away from Tottenham Hotspur this summer according to The Independent. The report also states that United have but just under £25 million for the English central defensive midfielder, which would need to be more than double that in order to wrestle the player away from White Hart Lane, well Wembley next season. The reports seem to be suggested as nothing but speculation with Sky Sports also reporting that Dier will not be allowed to leave the club this summer and not bids have been made for the player, which makes me wonder where The Independent get their information from.

Dier emerged as a target for Jose Mourinho before the end of last season with the club being ‘cautiously optimistic’ of a deal being agreed. Thet optimism seems to have been right as Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is not the best guy to negotiate with, as Sir Alex Ferguson found out whilst trying to sign both Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov over the years. The Independent states that United are looking for a Premier League experienced midfielder this summer with Dier and Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic, but after stealing Romelu Lukaku from under the reigning Premier League champions noses over the weekend, Dier was seen as the most gettable player based on the fact the relationship between United and Chelsea has soured.

Spurs say Dier is not for sale at any price but United’s hierarchy seems to believe the player has his heart set on a move to the Theatre of Dreams, although there are not quotes or suggestions of this, which could well be pie in the sky. Sky Sports have stated that Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino will only let players leave the club this summer if he is happy to let them go and it would suggest Dier is not a player he wants to allow to head to a Premier League rival such as United, who will be expected to launch a title challenge this coming season, especially after falling short in the league last season and having to win the UEFA Europa League in order to qualify for the UEFA Champions League this coming season.

Dier signed a five-year contract with Spurs back in September 2015 after his debut season with the club, which suggests Spurs are right to try and stop him from leaving the club. Every player has their price though. Sir Alex Ferguson once said he would not sell Real Madrid a virus after their chase of Cristiano Ronaldo, but a deal was agreed with saw the Portuguese winger leave Old Trafford for the Santiago Bernabeu for an then £80 million world record transfer fee. Spurs tend to mean business though but saying that Gareth Bale and Luka Modric before him were not for sale and they both left the White Hart Lane club.

It does make me wonder if Dier is a smokescreen for another player, perhaps Matic also. There have been lots of speculation about both players heading to Manchester United this summer, but close to half way through July and there has been no movement for either player. United were trying to sign Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata until a week ago when out of the blue a £75 million deal with Everton for Romelu Lukaku was reported last Thursday morning with Chelsea then matching the offer on Friday evening and United announcing a deal was done pending medical and personal terms with the player being unveiled on Monday. United must have something else in the bag this summer.
