Fred the Red to be Fred the Favourite?

Frederico Rodrigues de Paula Santos simply known as Fred, joined Manchester this summer in a deal worth up £60 million from Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk. At 5 feet 6 inches Fred is a diminutive midfielder but everything about his play suggests that he has a big heart, something that many believe will see him become fan favourite at Old Trafford.

United beat off reported interest from Neighbours Manchester City to secure the signing of Fred this summer. But what was it that United saw in Fred that convinced them he could be a success for United and as a result made them pull out all the stops to sign him?

Everything about the dynamic Brazilian midfielder suggests that he is not only a Jose Mourinho type player, but also a player that has the potential to be loved by the Old Trafford faithful. Fred has already shown in his first couple of appearances for The Reds that he has a huge amount of stamina, which means he can get back and break up the play of the opposition whilst being a creative threat further forward. During his time with Shakhtar Donetsk, the Brazilian was often entrusted with taking set pieces. With a cultured a left foot, he was known for providing many a good delivery from free kicks.

However, with United having a number of set-piece options already within their first XI, it remains to be seen whether Fred will get the opportunity to impress from dead ball situations at the club.

The Brazilian international provides United with a genuine all action box-to-box midfield option and if there is one thing that United supporters love to see it’s a player giving 100% for the shirt. When you look at Fred the player, you could draw comparisons to fellow countryman Anderson, who was at the club from 2007 to 2015. Whilst Anderson may have frustrated at times during his eight-year stay with United, that Brazilian flare and work rate he brought to the centre of the park saw him become a hit with the fans. You could hear his name being sung on a regular basis during a United match day and when fans sing your name at Old Trafford you know you’ve made it.

United needed a midfield recruit this summer after Michael Carrick hung up his boots at the end of last season. If Fred can have anything like the career Carrick did at United, he will be able to look back and know he has had a great career. United supporters will hope that Fred’s industrious style can be the final piece of the jigsaw that finally will allow fellow midfielder Paul Pogba to have more of a free rein in the United team. Alongside Fred and Nemanja Matic the French World Cup winner should be given the license to become a more influential player for the team.

Fred made his Premier League debut for Manchester United on Friday night. He played 77 minutes and put in an impressive display in a United midfield that had a freshness and energy to it. Fred was replaced by Scott McTominay and left the pitch to a standing ovation from the crowd; something that I firmly believe the Brazilian midfielder will see more of during his time at the club.
