Fred to finally be announced as a Manchester United player this week

Manchester United are reportedly set to announce Fred this week according to Sky Sports. On Tuesday 5th June 2018, United made an announcement confirming that the Old Trafford club had an agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk and the player had a medical at the clubs Aon training complex in Carrington the day before, whilst Brazil were in the country for a friendly against Croatia at Anfield on the 3rd June, training in London both before and after the match. The statement put out by the official Manchester United website, said:

“Manchester United is delighted to announce it has reached agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk for the transfer of Frederico Rodrigues de Paula Santos. A further announcement will be made in due course.”

United have been working on a work permit for the Brazilian, which is expected to go through imminently which means the signing of Fred can be properly announced. It was suggested that Fred would be the first signing this summer with Diogo Dalot coming in as the second signing this summer, but the 19-year-old Portuguese defender became the first signing, despite undergoing his medical a day after Fred, his signing being announced before the Brazilian.

The fee for Fred is expected to be around £52 million with the 25-year-old reportedly signing a five-year contract at the Theatre of Dreams. Fred is currently in Russia at the FIFA World Cup, yet did not play any part in the 1-1 draw with Switzerland on Sunday and could be in contention to play a part in the second group stage match against Costa Rica on Friday. United’s supporters will finally be happy that the signing of Fred is close to being completed and the club moves on to another signing this summer.

Jose Mourinho is after a commanding central defender with Toby Alderweireld and seven other names suggested to be on the manager’s wish list. A second central midfielder will be necessary as Marouane Fellaini’s contract at the club expires in ten days time (including today). Mourinho is also expected to sign a forward to take the pressure off Romelu Lukaku as well as reports of a new left-back, which has been confirmed by some journalists and denied by others so that one is up in the air. United do need a right-winger though as that position is problematic.

This summer is said to be a big one for Mourinho, who has worked wonders with his squad in the last two seasons but will be expected to do much better this coming season with United’s playing style one of the biggest problems with supporters demanding entertaining football, which really needs to be part of the club going forward. Mourinho will know this, despite his pragmatic style and with a back line he can trust to do the job, things should start to shift when it comes to a free-flowing attack, which we all know United are capable of.
