Guillermo Varela could be out of chances and out of the club

Guillermo Varela has not had the greatest of starts at Manchester United. After signing for the club he spent time on loan with Real Madrid and was tipped to be signed permanently by the club, but that never happened. He then returned to United, played in the U21 league and because of injury, then manager Louis van Gaal called him up to the first team, giving him a chance to impress and that he did. After the Dutchman was sacked, Varela was not favoured by new manager Jose Mourinho and was loaned out to Eintracht Frankfurt for the entirety of last season. He did well but suffered a season-ending injury, which turned out to not be as serious as was first thought, but suffered a setback and sat out of action a little longer.

The Uruguayan was supposed to play for the Bundesliga club in the DFB-Pokal at the end of the season but despite being told not to, he got a tattoo which got infected and he was sent back to Manchester United prematurely, albeit by a few days, give or take. That showing of attitude would not have gone down well with Jose Mourinho, who chose not to take the player on the club’s pre-season tour of the United States of America and along with Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Varela is linked with an exit from United this summer. With this being said, and with the likelihood a transfer could happen this summer, there would be little chance of the player breaking into Mourinho team next season.

If a transfer for the player fails, another loan spell could well happen with the Uruguayan out of contract next summer, which could see the player leave United as a free agent. Varela, if he has aspirations to play for United, will need to put his head down and show what he can do, particularly at the level he was at when Van Gaal gave him the chance as Mourinho may see something in the player if he works hard and does what he needs to do. Antonio Valencia is United’s right-back at present and he does not have competition in that role with Matteo Darmian mainly played at left-back following the injury to Luke Shaw, which could well change should Demetri Mitchell step up and contend with Shaw for the left-back slot.

Varela may be quickly running out of chances to succeed at the Old Trafford club, which could well be down to his attitude – if his ability was viewed alone, he would be given the chance to impress, so there must be something else stopping him from getting the chance he desires. I do expect Varela to leave the club this summer, whether a permanent switch or a loan spell as he seems to have run out of chances. However, there have been many players at different club’s who were out of chances, earning the respect of the manager and the chance to head in the right direction. If Varela does not put his head down and impress, he could have a long career ahead of him with a reputation which could supersede his ability, a bad mix for any club interested in him.
