Henrikh Mkhitaryan refuses to rule out being fit for the Manchester derby

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has provided fans with an update regarding his injury through his personal Twitter account. Manchester United’s summer signing seemed genuinely touched by fans concerns and has revealed he will give his all to get back onto the field as soon as possible, although his eagerness to play a part in what would be his first Manchester derby was there for all to see.

The 27-year-old picked up an unfortunate injury on international duty with Armenia during an off-the-ball incident which led to him colliding with Marek Suchy, of the Czech Republic. Suchy, who plays his club football for FC Basel, respectively, has insisted since the game that he did not intentionally injure United’s attacking midfielder and refused to show much guilt.

“I think it was not some really hard challenge, he was a fast player and I was just standing there, we hit each other and I hope he will be okay and it will not be so hard for him and he will not miss so many days. This is football and I will not think about it much more.”

Various reports have emerged over the past week suggesting that Mkhitaryan will miss the hugely anticipated first Barclay’s Premier League Jose Mourinho vs Pep Guardiola clash. Those reports were backed up when the Armenian FA released a statement revealing the kind of injury the former Borussia Dortmund man had picked up usually takes around ‘a week to 10 days’ to recover from, ruling him out the derby. Although Mourinho’s staff wasted no time getting him back to Manchester to begin his recovery process and Mkhitaryan has since hinted at the fact he still holds some hope of making the fixture.

While it remains unclear whether he will make the game or not, the Armenian international has certainly felt the love from the Manchester United fans sending their best wishes.

It appears Mkhitaryan will do all he can to prove to Mourinho and co that he is fit enough to play a part this coming weekend, but it must be said the derby is no place for half-fit players, especially considering this one has all the ingredients to be a tie that will go full throttle from start to finish. Whether the midfielder would start the game, even if fit, also has a question mark hanging over it, as he has only made four substitute appearances in four competitive fixtures so far this season as he settles into life at Manchester United. However, to have a player of his calibre ready and waiting to come off the bench is never a bad thing – as we witnessed during United’s last Premier League fixture against Mike Phelan’s spirited and stubborn Hull City side.

The Red Devils were struggling to break the barrier of a well set up Hull defence but when United’s Portuguese manager introduced Mkhitaryan and Marcus Rashford it certainly helped change the dynamics of the game – which helped United get that all important goal in what was virtually the last kick of the game, when Wayne Rooney provided a lovely ball into the box for Rashford to finish off. Furthermore, the Bundesliga’s Player of the Season last campaign picked up 23 goals and 32 assists in all competitions in Germany, so there is no doubting his ability to score and create chances – a player of his class could make all the difference this Saturday, so here is to hoping he manages to make the fixture, although, admittedly right now it is looking unlikely as we await further updates which will likely come from Mourinho’s press conference this Friday.
