Jesper Blomqvist: Ibrahimovic pumped to play for Manchester United

On his own, Zlatan Ibrahimovic draws a big crowd. The same can be said about Manchester United. Combine the two and they become a giant powerhouse. Former United player and treble-winner Jesper Blomqvist believest that Ibrahimovic energized for the challenge at Old Trafford. So far, the 34-year-old has proven critics wrong after a near perfect start, scoring in his first three matches for the Red Devils. Blomqvist, who like Ibrahimovic is Swedish, is just as excited as fans when seeing the striker play in the red kit.

“Zlatan couldn’t have got a better start. It’s crazy. It’s incredible. It’s so cool.

“England is a country crazy for football and Manchester is a city crazy for football where the fans have got used to pretty much everything, but it has been a long time since they’ve seen this kind of start from a player.

“You can see with Zlatan that he is fully aware, that he knows that this is a wonderful challenge that he needed now to be able to play well.

“You can see that he is incredibly pumped up for this and it’s been a long time since I’ve seen him this engaged and so enjoying his football.

“It’s wonderful to see that. It’s hard to beat the start he’s had at United.”

Ibrahimovic creates his own atmosphere in a similar way to former United striker Eric Cantona. Cantona is still a fan-favourite because of his personality and ‘don’t care’ attitude that the Frenchman played with. Ibrahimovic is quite similar to Cantona in that respect. Cantona commented on Ibrahimovic’s arrival at United by saying that the Swede could be the “Prince of Manchester” in which Ibrahimovic responded by saying he would become the ‘God of Manchester’. That kind of attitude falls right into what Ibrahimovic is known for. Blomqvist also says that maintaining that character could be difficult in England compared to the rest of Europe, but Ibrahimovic has handled himself well thus far.

“He reminds me of Eric Cantona, the aura he has, how he carries himself. He really shows everyone that he is a winner and that he is convinced that everything will be alright. He is just as cool, calm and confident as Cantona.

“For Mourinho and the others at Manchester United that chose him, that winner mentality means a lot because they really need that winner mentality.

“It will demand a lot from him, both on and off the pitch to become as loved as Eric Cantona, but he couldn’t have had a better start.

“And if he continues in this fashion it shouldn’t be a problem. But he has to continue to get results, because even if everyone in Sweden knows what he can do, all fans and journalists in England weren’t as convinced. And English journalists can be very harsh.

“But now he has set the standard, now he can continue to build something even better from this.”

It is unknown whether or not Ibrahimovic’s form stays consistent while at United after the spectacular start to the early stage of his Old Trafford career. He is still just as ambitious as he was when he was in his younger years. Winning a Premier League would brilliantly top off the extravagant career that Ibrahimovic has had. Though he has not won a UEFA Champions League, something he could win with United if the club qualifies this year and goes all the way in the tournament. Over-hyping Ibrahimovic is certainly a worry for fans because by simply scoring a goal he is considered to be in form. Ibrahimovic is a great striker and rarely goes out of form, but he is 34-years-old. So far, everything is going perfectly for Ibrahimovic and in a matter of time, it will be easier to see how consistent the Swede will be at Old Trafford.
