Jesse Lingard unfased by the prospect of new recruits and targeting more success

  1. Jesse Lingard is no doubt a player who splits opinion amongst almost the whole of Manchester United’s fan base. As a hard-working young lad who gained his opportunity to appear in the first team through multiple loan spells, on paper he is a youth product who has pursued his career in the correct way.

Following his breakthrough season under Louis van Gaal during the 2014/15 season, Lingard has gained the reputation of becoming a somewhat important member of United’s squad predominantly operating as a squad rotation player but also as a trusted player in the big games. Notoriously recognised for his hard work ethic and non-stop movement, Lingard does bring a zest of energy to United’s team as both his hard work and welcoming of defensive duties must be praised, particularly from a winger in the modern game. However, Lingard’s criticism certainly stems from fans who become frustrated with his end product and it would be a fair assessment in stating he certainly does possess less natural ability in comparison to the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Despite this, Lingard is certainly not a player lacking in confidence and despite speculation surrounding new players arriving that play in similar areas to the Englishman, Lingard is already setting his sights high for next year. Speaking in a recent interview Lingard describes his desire for wanting more trophies and already can’t wait for the forthcoming season.

“Winning trophies is the main thing. Thats impeccable at Manchester United, theres no better feeling than lifting a trophy. Once you get that feeling you get the knock to go after it again.”

It is fair to say that it is this sort of mentality that has led Lingard to become one of Jose Mourinho’s favourite players to select, most particularly in the bigger games. In a season where the manager has openly criticised certain player’s attitudes and desire to play for the club, Lingard does provide a breath of fresh air in assuring his manager that he is determined and ready to play every time he pulls on the red shirt. Speaking in the interview, Lingard also reveals his delight at being selected on a more continuous basis and certainly feels comfortable with his situation at the club.

“Obviously we finished sixth this year, but we’re still in the Champions League and of course next year we’re going to focus on the Premier League.”

For those fans who wish Lingard out the departure door this summer, I would suggest do not get your hopes set too high. As one of the manager’s favourites and of course with the singing of a new recent deal, Lingard certainly looks settled under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United. Despite speculation linking United with the players who could potentially fill Lingard’s position such as the likes of James Rodriguez, Ivan Perisic and Antoine Griezmann, Lingard evidently seems unfazed and with his concentration already focused on next season, fans should expect to see him in just as much game time.
