Johnstone extends Doncaster loan

Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has extended his loan spell with Sky Bet Championship side Doncaster Rovers for the remainder of the season. The 21-year-old has earned himself lots of praise since he joined Paul Dickov’s side in January and has so far made 11 appearances for the club.

The Rovers beat Yorkshire rivals Leeds United 2-1 in their last match and this weekend they entertain Birmingham City at the Keepmoat Stadium which could see Johnstone face United team-mates Federico Macheda, Tom Thorpe and Tyler Blackett who are all on loan with the side for the remainder of the season. Macheda netted twice in Birmingham’s last fixture, so the 21-year-old  all no doubt be tested during the match. Macheda has been a substitute for the last few matches, perhaps after scoring twice, he will start this one. United’s U21 coach Warren Joyce recently praised Johnstone saying:

“He’s had a good bit of experience out on loan and the feedback has been really good from Sam as well. It’s a good test and a good challenge for him.

“He looks a commanding figure at Championship level and has done really well.”

Johnstone has come a long way since going out on loan this season. He made one appearance for Yeovil Town at the start of the season, then returned to United due to injury. He was an unused substitute twice in a Capital One Cup match against Stoke City and in a Barclays Premier League match against West Ham United. Since heading to South Yorkshire in January, he has really shown his abilities and could earn himself a future at the Old Trafford club under David Moyes, especially if he keeps progressing and earning the praise of his manager.

We are hosting a Sportsman’s dinner on Friday 11th April 2014 with Manchester United legends Bryan Robson and Norman Whiteside.
