Since Manchester United signed Eric Bailly early in June, Jose Mourinho’s new employer has failed to land any more of the Portuguese’s desired targets leaving the new United manager frustrated. Mourinho has been reported as wanting to make a statement signing, believed to be former Manchester United midfielder, Paul Pogba. Mourinho has prioritized the signing of the Juventus midfielder to the extent that he vetoed a move for Miralem Pjanic from AS Roma.
But despite wanting more players than just Pogba, Ed Woodward has failed to deliver more than Bailly, so far. The names on Mourinho’s list also include Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan and was thought to include new Bayern Munich signing, Renato Sanches. United, out of fear of confirming Louis van Gaal’s departure, passed on signing Sanches and Bayern swooped in for the 18-year-old. Woodward had Sanches scouted extensively and could have clinched a deal for the Portuguese youngster a week before the Bayern deal was confirmed, but United would not publicly undermine Van Gaal.
Mourinho has been tasked with returning United back from the dead, although winning the FA Cup in Van Gaal’s last match showed excellent signs of life. Historically, Mourinho likes to have his signings done and dusted long before the players start reporting back from summer holidays and tournaments, but with players set to report in the coming week, this may have to change. With reports surfacing that United may be coming to a conclusion in the deals for two of Mourinho’s targets, Ibrahimovic, and Mkhitaryan, Mourinho’s squad in his first season on the Old Trafford hot seat seems to be taking shape.
Manchester United travel to China for their week-long preseason tour and will face Borussia Dortmund on the 22nd July and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on the 25th July. Wayne Rooney’s testimonial against Everton on the 3rd August adds a third preseason match for Mourinho’s men before United travel to Bournemouth 10 days later to open the Premier League season. Mourinho will want to ensure he has all his desired targets completed and in the squad before opening day so he can get off to a flying start in his first season with Manchester United.
