Jose Mourinho signs new long-term Manchester United contract

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has signed a new contract with the Old Trafford club, keeping him in charge of the club until the summer of 2020, with an option of a further year written into the new long-term contract. It was not all that long ago when the great British media were trying to suggest the legendary Portuguese manager would jump ship this summer to manage Paris Saint-Germain, all because he was asked which French club he admired by a French journalist. For weeks this ‘false’ speculation was rife in the media.

When reports first surfaced about Mourinho’s new contract at the club, the media were quick to adopt a different direction on their reports, seemingly reporting facts on the matter for the first time since Mourinho was announced as the new United manager in may 2016. If you cast your mind back to December 2015, when Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea and the media were suggesting Louis van Gaal should be sacked too, with the Portuguese taking over the helm at United, he was touted as the right man for the job.

Since becoming the United manager, the respect for Mourinho has not quite been there for the media, who had suggested he does not trust youth and was not the man to guide United forward because of his defensive style of play – which is one of the things responsible for his success at every club he has managed. Mourinho won the FA Community Shield in his first competitive match as United manager, then won his first major honour nearly a year ago as United beat Southampton at Wembley in the EFL Cup final.

Mourinho then led United to the summit of European football, earning the club a place in the UEFA Champions League after United beat Ajax in the UEFA Europa League final, finishing sixth in the Premier League last season. Since arriving as United manager, Mourinho managed to bring in Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba in his first summer transfer window, all without Champions League football. The following summer, Mourinho signed Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku, and Nemanja Matic also re-signing Ibrahimovic on a one-year deal.

Mourinho has led his side to the first challenge of the Premier League title in five years, currently second to Manchester City, who are 12 points ahead of the Red Devils in the league. He was unable to see his side defend the Carabao Cup this season, losing to Bristol City but will lead United in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup against Yeovil Town on Friday evening. United also earned a place in the knockout stages of the Champions League this season, facing Sevilla next month. This week, Mourinho made a big signing in Alexis Sanchez, beating City to the players signature.

Speaking of his new long-term deal at the Theatre of Dreams, Mourinho said:

“I am really honoured and proud to be Manchester United manager. I would like to say a big thank you to the owners and to Mr Woodward for the recognition of my hard work and dedication. I am delighted they feel and trust that I am the right manager for this great club for the foreseeable future.

“We have set very high standards – winning three trophies in one season – but those are the standards I expect my teams to aim for. We are creating the conditions for a brilliant and successful future for Manchester United.

“My thanks, of course, go to my staff and to my players; without their empathy and friendship this wouldn’t be possible. I love my players and it is a pleasure to know that we are going to be together for at least the next three years.

“And I cannot finish without thanking the fans for their support and for making me feel at home so quickly. I repeat, to be Manchester United manager is an honour every day and I am really happy.”

Ed Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman, spoke about Mourinho’s new long-term deal at the Theatre of Dreams, saying:

“Jose has already achieved a great deal as Manchester United manager and I am delighted that he has agreed to extend his commitment until at least 2020. His work rate and professionalism are exceptional and he has embraced the club’s desire to promote top quality young players to the first team. He has brought an energy and a sense of purpose to everything that he does and I am sure that will continue to bring results for the fans and the club.”
