Juan Mata believes Romelu Lukaku can help Manchester United win the Premier League

Manchester United attacking midfielder Juan Mata believes that Romelu Lukaku can help the Old Trafford club to win the Premier League this coming season. The former Chelsea player, reunited with Jose Mourinho just over a year ago despite speculation that he could leave the Theatre of Dreams, played with Lukaku at Stamford Bridge and the fact the Belgian has knowledge of the league, it could be an advantage for United, who will be expected to challenge the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal, the teams which finished above United last season.

Mata and Lukaku have a working relationship from their time playing together at Chelsea, not quite the relationship Lukaku shares with Paul Pogba, but the fact Mata and Lukaku both know how each other play could be a strong indicator that the ingredients could all be there for Mourinho’s side to romp home in the league leaving beaten teams in their path. That is what we all want to see and we could be closer to seeing it if things are done correctly this summer both on and off the pitch. Mata, speaking to Marca and reported by The Mirror, said:

“We played together for Chelsea and he [Lukaku] has had a lot of good seasons at Everton. He knows the coach well, and scores a lot of goals which we hope he will carry on so we can try to win the league.”

Mata also stated that he was looking ahead to the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid on the 8th August where United would be pitted against the Spanish club for the second time this summer in a bid to win their first trophy of the new season, a trophy United have not lifted since 1991, having two chances to win it in 1999 and 2008, failing to take it back to Old Trafford again. Mata spoke about this with Marca suggesting that Mourinho was already thinking about the match despite te club playing seven matches between now and then during their pre-season tour of the United States of American, Norway and Ireland. The Spanish midfielder said:

“I think Jose is already thinking about the final, and has been since Real won the Champions League. The coach wants to win the trophy whilst in charge at United and although Zinedine Zidane had an incredible year in charge, we will try to create problems for them.”

Mata seems excited to link up with Lukaku again, which came out of the blue on Thursday morning with reports suggesting that Everton had accepted a £75 million bid from United for the player, which was denied by the Goodison Park club soon afterwards. On Friday evening Chelsea matches United’s bid for the player, which seemed to come a little too late for anything to be gained from it, seemingly it being a show of face rather than a launch of a bid to ensure the club got the player. Lukaku is said to be undergoing a medical on Saturday in Los Angeles, some eight hours behind the United Kingdom, so come Sunday or Monday, there could be an announcement. United will head to LA on Sunday to start training for their pre-season tour with the travelling squad set to be announced at some point throughout Sunday.
