Loan Watch: Ben Pearson grabs an assist for Barnsley!

Ben Pearson

The new season has started, thankfully. Manchester United have three prospects currently on loan in the Football League. Will Keane on a season-long deal with Sky Bet Championship side Preston North End and both Ben Pearson and Joe Rothwell on loan with Sky Bet League One side Barnsley, which expire on the 3rd January. All three players spent spells away from Old Trafford last season with Pearson being the one that achieved the most, stepping up from U21 football, to the standard in League One.

Here is how I feel all three players fared in their opening matches this season:

Ben Pearson – Barnsley

Ben Pearson played 90 minutes in the 3-1 defeat to Chesterfield in the Sky Bet League One. Pearson had an average game on his first start for his loan club this season, grabbing an assist in Barnsley’s only goal of the game inside the fourth minute. The young United midfielder made some mistakes for Barnsley, but that is all a learning curve for the youngster, who could have a very good future at the club should he continue to prove himself on his second loan spell away from Old Trafford.

Joe Rothwell – Barnsley

Joe Rothwell played seven minutes in the 3-1 defeat against Chesterfield in the Sky Bet League One, replacing George Smith. The United youngster was not on the pitch long enough to make an impact to the game. His loan spell with Blackpool last season was disastrous, but he had an impact for Warren Joyce’s U21 side late last season. This loan spell, should he push himself into the starting XI, could define his future at Old Trafford.

Will Keane – Preston North End

Will Keane played 84 minutes in the 0-0 draw with Middlesbrough in the Sky Bet Championship. Keane had an average game on his debut for Preston North End. He had a couple of chances on goal, a shot which was saved bu the Boro keeper on the 28th minute and an off target shot six minutes later. The young Manchester United striker held up the ball well for his team and made it hard for the opposition to get the ball off him. He was replaced six minutes from time with Jordan Hugill replacing him.
