Luke Shaw in talks for new Manchester United contract – reports

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw is reportedly in line for a massive turnaround at the Old Trafford club with talks ongoing for a new long-term contract. In the past week, Jose Mourinho and Juan Mata have signed new contracts at the club and reports of David De Gea in talks for a new long-term contract too, which suggests United are looking to nail down core players at the club to ensure they remain at the Theatre of Dreams. Shaw has not had the best of starts at United with a lack of form, attitude and then his double leg fracture which kept him out for nearly a full season.

Since recovering from that devastating injury, Shaw found it hard to break into the United squad under both Louis van Gaal and Mourinho. The current United manager publicly criticised Shaw for the lack of effort he was showing at the club last season, ending the season on the sidelines after suffering another injury which required surgery. During the summer, Shaw was aiming to achieve full fitness ahead of the new season, which he did but was not called upon by Mourinho consistently. It was reported that Shaw had a 12-month extension in his contract activated last week.

Shaw has had a number of one to one chats with Mourinho over his future at the Old Trafford club which has reportedly been passed onto The Sun by one of their sources at the club. The newspaper carried apparent quotes, saying:

“Luke has had a series of one-on-one chats with the boss. He told him he will sanction an extended deal if he can continue to improve and make his mark. It’s an amazing turnaround for him after everything that’s happened. Luke is in a much better frame of mind now. He feels he has a future here despite everything that has been said and talked about.”

Shaw was in the final year of his original contract at the club at the start of the season and could have left Old Trafford as a free agent this summer. That has seemingly been cast out now that a further year, which was stipulated in his contract, has reportedly been activated. The club has not confirmed as to whether this is, in fact, true, as they had with Mata in the last 24 hours. Earlier this season, it was revealed at Shaw was United’s fittest player, which raised a few eyebrows as at the time he was not consistently playing in the squad.

Recently though, Shaw has been called into action by Mourinho and he has looked like a different player, more like the player United signed from Southampton in the summer of 2014. This season, Shaw has made 12 appearances, ten starts and two substitute appearances – playing in the Premier League, Carabao Cup, UEFA Champions League and the Emirates FA Cup. The 22-year-old has not scored any goals or registered any assists but has registered 13 shots on goal, four of those being on target.

In the Premier League alone, Shaw has made five appearances, all from the start of the match with United winning three of those matches – keeping three clean sheets and conceding two goals in total. The player has a 100% success rate when making tackles, making a total of six in those matches. Shaw has blocked four shots in the league, made one interception, 16 clearances – nine of them headed clearances. Shaw has registered 282 passed, an average of 56.40 per match. He has also put 23 crosses into advanced areas, none of them successful yet.

Shaw will be hoping to be part of the squad to face Tottenham Hotspur this evening at Wembley with United looking to keep the chase on Manchester City, who face West Bromwich Albion at the Etihad. Shaw last played for United on Friday evening in the 4-0 victory over Yeovil Town in the Emirates FA Cup. The player that has emerged from the flames this season is the one United will be looking to keep at the Theatre of Dreams for the foreseeable future. United were linked to many left-backs in the last few months, seemingly not needing to venture into the market at this time.
