Luke Shaw included in squad to face Bournemouth, according to Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho’s time at Manchester United has not been the easiest for some players. The likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Anthony Martial, and Luke Shaw have found themselves outside of the first team picture looking in. Mkhitaryan and Martial have both managed to return to the team, and the same might be happening with Shaw, as Mourinho has confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Shaw will be included in United’s team to face Bournemouth on Saturday.

“Luke Shaw is selected for tomorrow so you won’t need to have the guys at The Lowry to take the pics to see if he’s selected, he’s in the list, so one step up from not being in the final. Not even on the bench and now again like Wayne he’s selected, playing or on the bench, he become again an option to us.”

Shaw has managed just 14 appearances in all competitions this season, and his last one, in United’s 4-1 FA Cup win over Wigan being his last one, and so far his only appearance in 2017. But it seems like Mourinho is willing to give him his chance after seeing the improvements he’s made in training. As was previously the case with both Mkhitaryan and Martial, Mourinho went on to praise Shaw for his efforts in training and the improvements he’s had.

“Luke is working hard, he’s trying to improve, he improved by the physical point of view I can say that by good dedication, specific work and now he needs some opportunities to feel alive, he needs minutes on the pitch to show evolution is not physical but globally because a player is not just a better physical condition.”

While Shaw missed part of the season due to a groin injury, he struggled to keep his place before that and has barely been in consideration since. Shaw was tipped to be a major success at United, but his progress was halted by the horrible injury he suffered last season. Since returning to football at the start of the season, Shaw has yet to perform to the level he was at before the injury and has since lost his place, with Mourinho preferring to play Daley Blind, Matteo Darmian, and Marcos Rojo at left back.

But as has been the case with previous players, Mourinho is willing to reward his players’ efforts with game time. Mkhitaryan and Martial have both experienced this, while Bastian Schweinsteiger’s professionalism has seen him once again considered for selection after being left out completely. If Shaw has indeed proven his worth in training then that is great news for him and the team.

United have been lacking quality attacking support from left back, and as shown by Antonio Valencia’s superb form this season at right back, players like this could thrive in United’s system and greatly help the team. Shaw is a very talented player, as he has shown before, and a return to the first team could be a massive boost for the team.
