Manchester United add talented French defender in deadline day swoop

Manchester United have agreed to sign 16-year-old Valenciennes central defender Dayot Upamecano in a deal worth €450,000 plus add ons. The player joins Víctor Valdés, Sadiq El-Fitouri, Kayne Roberts and Josh Doughty who have also joined United this January. Upamecano is a current France U17 international with two caps, he recently played against England U17’s in October. He has also been capped three times at U16 level.  The player has not been at Valenciennes very long having only signed from Evreux Football Club 27  in July 2013. Valenciennes are reluctant to part with a player they rate highly but accepted a deal because they are in financial difficulties and need to find €2 million by the end of June.

Upamecano only turned 16 in October meaning he will be eligible to play U16’s football in England. He will join a strong U18’s defence which has only conceded three goals in their past eight games. The fact that United were willing to pay a significant fee for a 16-year-old suggests he is highly rated by United especially considering it is possibly the strongest area in United’s U18’s with Ro-Shaun Williams and Axel Tuanzebe very impressive this season and the likes of Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Jimmy Dunne, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Charlie Scott and Tyler Reid all capable of playing central defence.
