Manchester United agree £55 million fee with Crystal Palace for Aaron Wan-Bissaka – reports

Manchester United have reportedly agreed on a £55 million deal to sign right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace this summer. This news comes from Duncan Castles with an article in the Daily Record. United have been linked with the 21-year-old fullback since the end of the season and it was suggested that the player was the number one target in the position for United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The reported £55 million fee will be a world record fee for a fullback, so executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward will be happy with that prospect as it will give him a bragging right, something for the club to tweet about which could even result in them receiving many impressions on social media, which is the real aim for the club in this day an age, which is a shame as winning actual honours on the pitch should be the aim.

United have tried to get a deal across the line for a number of weeks now with many bids being rejected by Palace, which is only fair as they will not have wanted such a young player with ambition to leave the club for a small fee. The fee will top the €57.5 million spent by Manchester City on Benjamin Mendy two years ago. United will now have a fullback for each side who have been signed from a fellow Premier League side.

Luke Shaw signed for United five years ago now and was the most expensive teenage defender at the time with United spending £30 million on him, signing him to a new contract over the past season, which will see him remain at the club until at least the summer of 2023. This will be Solskjaer’s first pre-season, heading into his first full season as manager of the club. It was important to get deals such as this over the line.

United conceded 54 goals in the Premier League last season, the most goals conceded in a single league since the 1978/79 season, which shows how bad United defence had got. As both Phil Jones and Chris Smalling had both signed a new contract at the club in the past season, it suggested that the club had no ambition as the pair had not really grown in stature at the club. A commanding central defender could really change the defence this summer.

Wan-Bissaka is currently representing England in the UEFA U21 European Championships held in Italy and San Marino this summer. They were beaten 2-1 by France on Tuesday evening, opening the scoring in the match, doubling that which was cancelled out for offside with France winning two penalties, one being saved by United goalkeeper Dean Henderson, the other hitting the post.

The 21-year-old scored an own goal in the dying minutes of the match after France equalised minutes before after England were down to ten men after Hamza Choudhury was sent off for a bad foul in the run-up to the second penalty of the match. Wan-Bissaka and his England teammates will be looking to overcome that defeat on Friday evening when the face Romania in Cesena.
