Manchester United announce eight new scholars for their U18 squad

Manchester United have announced their Academy intake for the 2016/17 season as the club named eight new first year scholars for the U18 team. The best-known name of the new intake is England U16 captain Angel Gomes who made his U18’s debut in the 2014/15 season as a 14-year-old and made 17 appearances for the U18’s last season scoring three goals and providing six assists.

Two of the other players who stepped up to the U18’s and both got on the scoresheet towards the end of last season; Aidan Barlow and George Tanner are both included in the new scholars list alongside defenders Harry Spratt and Jake Barrett who also featured for the U18’s a couple of times. Central defenders Max Dunne who joined the club at the age of 14 and Italian Luca Ercolani who joined last season, are the only two players moving up from the U16’s who have not yet featured for Manchester United U18’s.

The final player included in the U18 intake is Republic of Ireland U16 captain Lee O’Connor, who has joined the club from Villa FC in Waterford. O’Connor is a versatile player who can play anywhere across the midfield or defence who represented the Republic of Ireland U17’s in the European Championship qualifiers at the age of 15. United have also signed Switzerland U16 striker Nishan Burkart from FC Zürich and Dutch winger Tahith Chong from Feyenoord, but they have not been included in the scholars list yet as they are awaiting international clearance.
