Manchester United boosted in Bruno Fernandes chase; English reports suggest £49 million bid to be made…

Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes has been linked to Manchester United for a long time now. Various reports in the media have also seen Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and even Liverpool credited with an interest in the player, however, both United and Spurs seemed to be more interested in the 24-year-old this summer.

Current speculation suggests that the North London UEFA Champions League finalists are not the frontrunners for Fernandes this summer as their move is dependent on Christian Eriksen leaving Spurs and it does not seem that is going to happen. United, however, have the money to spend and could make this transfer simple.

It is suggested that United are readying a £49 million bid for the player, which contradicts reports from Portuguese newspapers over recent weeks, some of which suggested United had offered an €80 million deal for the player. It is understood that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen on adding the player to his squad this summer.

Solskjaer sold Marouane Fellaini in the January transfer window and has seen Ander Herrera leave the club as a free agent this summer. Some reports in the media suggest that the Norwegian wants to sign an attack-minded midfielder and a defensive-minded midfielder this summer. Fernandes would fit the former.

The 24-year-old scored 31 goals in 50 appearances from the midfield during the course of last season, which is a great figure to hit for the player seeking a bigger challenge. United could do much worse in the transfer market than to sign Fernandes if they can get Sporting to agree on a deal as they are currently holding out for a minimum of €70 million.

The agent of Fernandes, Miguel Pinho, has been in England this week with reports suggesting that he held talks with Spurs on Thursday. This could force United’s hand to make a decision on the player and it seems they could have a free move on the player with no other clubs coming forward for him so far this summer.

Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã have been vocal about Fernandes, United and Spurs recently, again putting something into print on Friday morning. It covers the fact that Pinho has returned from England and picked up offers of less than €70 million for Fernandes. It is suggested the player is tempted by United because of their ‘history and mystique’.

Based on the length of time it seems to have taken United to start making a move for Crystal Palace right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who was dropped for England’s U21 European Championships match against Romania on Friday evening, it could be a while before anything seems to develop here with Fernandes. United could still sign him but he could remain in Portugal. Sooner or later, something will give, eventually.
