Manchester United confident of luring Dutch winger this summer

Manchester United are confident of signing PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay this summer, according to Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News. For weeks now, Depay has been subject of a lot of attention in the media with the player being linked to some of the biggest clubs in Europe with many contradicting reports over the past few days. In his article which was published on Thursday, Luckhurst stated that the 21-year-old could be paid £130,000 per week by the Old Trafford club, should he choose them this summer. Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain have been linked with the player, with Bayern Munich also being mentioned, but that turned out to be something over nothing.

Liverpool has previously been touted as a possible destination for the Dutch international with journalist Marcel van der Kraan talking to talkSPORT earlier this week suggestion that the Anfield club ‘had the strongest contact with the club’ over a prospective transfer this summer. Van der Kraan, speaking to talkSPORT said:

“The question still is will he go to Man U or Liverpool? Liverpool so far have the strongest contact with the club, they are in official talks – the board of PSV told us that.

“But then Man U first phone call last week made all the alarm bells go off, not just with PSV but with Depay because he will find his former manager there.

“I don’t think he will go to Paris although they offer the biggest wage packet. Last summer Spurs wanted to pay 20m euros which is about £15m. PSV wanted to take that but the player chose to wait and the transfer was postponed.

“With the progress the player has made PSV are not willing to accept that figure. They now want £25m and I think they will get that.

“Liverpool have not been scared off by that figure.”

Netherlands and Ajax legend Ronald de Boer has something different to say on the prospective deal this summer. With PSV Eindhoven confirming that the future of Depay is up for discussion this summer, also stating clubs have shown an interest in the player, one of those clubs being Manchester United, De Boer ventures into the relationship with Louis van Gaal and Memphis Depay, with the player looking to the Dutch coach as a ‘father figure’. Deeply does not wear that name on his shirt, due t the relationship with his own father, using Memphis as the name on his shirt instead. De Boer feels that the relationship between Van Gaal and Depay will ‘swing a deal in United’s favour’. Reported by the Mirror, De Boer, speaking about Depay’s future, said:

“I don’t want to say which club is more suitable for him.

“But if he goes to United he knows there’s a Dutch coach there in Van Gaal who knows him from the World Cup.

“That’s an advantage. He’s one of the biggest talents in Europe – he has everything.”

This season Depay has scored 23 goals in all competitions, assisting in a further three goals. In total he has shot at goal 172 times for his club, with 65 of those on target, which is a great stat for an attacking player. In addition to this, for the Netherlands, Depay has scored twice, with one assist, registering 10 shots with seven of those on target. Ronald de Boer continued on the subject of Depay, saying:

“He has skill compared to a young Cristiano Ronaldo. He is very lively, technically unbelievable, very skilful, very fast, he has a great goalscoring record, he can shoot from every distance – he has everything.

“For me, he is without doubt one of the best talents we have.”

Depay is currently being touted in the media with a £25 million fee, which is a good deal for the talented 21-year-old. United will obviously be a little reserved in their pursuance of the player, especially with the fact they were continually linked with Eden Hazard in the summer of 2012, being quite confident of securing a deal for the player who was playing for Lille at the time. Chelsea has won the UEFA Champions League at the end of the 2011/12 season, with Hazard opting to sign for the European champions, with United signing Shinji Kagawa of Borussia Dortmund, a move that lasted two years before he was sold to his former club at what will be considered as a loss.

Keeping this in mind, United can remain confident of luring Depay to the Theatre of Dreams in the summer, but with other clubs such as Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain interested in signing the player, there will always be thoughts of an Eden Hazard situation again this summer. With Depay’s relationship with Louis van Gaal, that may not be very likely, but until the player has signed on the dotted line, ad is pictured with the manager at Old Trafford holding the famous red shirt of Manchester United, anything can happen.
