Manchester United confirm Aaron Wan-Bissaka as their second signing of the summer

Manchester United has confirmed the signing of Aaron Wan-Bissaka as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s second signing of the summer. The 21-year-old right-back has been linked to the club for a number of months now. The player’s participation in the England U21 squad for the UEFA U21 European Championships is one of the reasons for the delay in his signing.

Wan-Bissaka has signed a five-year contract with the Old Trafford club which includes the option of a further year to be added, which is the case with every new signing and contract renewal over the last six years or so. It is not yet known what shirt number the player will wear, however, that will be confirmed either before, during, or after pre-season as the club gets ready for the new Premier League season.

Solskjaer is seeking to get his United squad firing this summer, already adding two players to his squad, losing Marouane Fellaini (in January), Ander Herrera and Antonio Valencia after the expiry of their current contracts (at the end of the month). The 21-year-old is not the only right-back to be purchased by the club recently as Diogo Dalot was signed last summer.

Wan-Bissaka could well become United’s long-term right-back at the Old Trafford club this season and he will be expected, at least by some sections of supporters, to hit the ground running. However, some patience will be required for every new signing the club makes this summer, also the talented youth coming through the ranks. Speaking about signing for the United, Wan-Bissaka said:

“It’s an unbelievable feeling and an honour to call myself a Manchester United player and something I know that only a small number of players have the privilege to say.

“I can’t wait to get going and integrated into the squad. I will have a short break now after the European Championships but I’m looking forward to starting training with the manager and my new team-mates on the pre-season tour.”

Solskjaer will be happy to get his second signing of the summer completed and will be eager to move onto other players he has lined up to join the Old Trafford club this summer. Already signing Daniel James from Swansea City this summer, the manager, speaking about his second signing, to the official Manchester United website:

“Aaron is one of the best upcoming defenders in the Premier League. He has the right work ethic, talent and mentality to play for Manchester United and he fits exactly the type of player that we are looking to bring into the squad to help us improve and push on further.

“Aaron is a young, hungry player and eager to learn and that’s important at his age. I am delighted he has signed with us and we look forward to continuing his tremendous development so far.”

It has been suggested that Solskjaer will be seeking to get singing completed before the squad leaves Manchester for their pre-season tour. It is expected that they will head to Australia on Sunday 7 July 2019 in order to get ready for their first two matches of the summer, against Perth Glory and Leeds United, both played in Perth. United will then head to Singapore, where they face Inter Milan, Shanghai, China, where they face Tottenham Hotspur before heading to Oslo, Norway, to face Kristiansund, then ending the pre-season campaign against AC Milan in Cardiff, Wales.
