Manchester United could sign Gianluigi Donnarumma to fill the void David De Gea will leave at the club

Manchester United will be left with a big decision this summer; letting David De Gea see out the remaining year on his contract, allowing him to leave the club as a free agent next summer or selling him this summer in order to see a return on their investment. A decision will also have to be made on whether they use existing goalkeepers or sign a new one.

United currently has Sergio Romero at the club; he signed under Louis van Gaal in the summer of 2015 and still has two years remaining on his contract. Lee Grant is also an option, who signed for the club last summer, still having another year on his contract. However, both may not be seen as contenders to carry the club forward post-De Gea.

One option United have is with AC Milan and Italy goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma. Turning just 20 in February, the player has achieved a lot in the game and has been considered by many clubs in the past, United being one of them just a few years ago. The only problem is that his agent is Mino Raiola.

However, that should not be something to worry about as Raiola also represents Romero and there have not been any problems with respect to him at the club. If Donnarumma progressed as a goalkeeper at United though, there might be interest from Raiola to move him on in order to make more money but the way the game is going with the money involved, any other agent could be exactly the same.

Over the past season, United conceded 54 goals in the Premier League also, the worst season for conceded goals since the 1978/79 season. De Gea has been in poor form and it looked like his head was not in the right place come the end of the season. De Gea is not a player linked to Real Madrid anymore. Not yet anyway. But he has been linked to Paris Saint-Germain.

It is possible that the French champions could sign him this summer or wait to get his as a free agent in a years time. However, with reports materialising earlier on Thursday which stated that PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is going to leave the club on the expiry of his contract at the end of the month, it could suggest that the club makes a move for De Gea this summer, either that or give Alphonse Areola a chance as the number one goalkeeper.

This season, Donnarumma played 39 times for Milan, playing a total of 3,362 minutes of football. He conceded 32 goals in the Serie A and the Supercoppa Italiana, keeping 15 clean sheets for his club. De Gea kept just seven clean sheets in the Premier League last season, committing four errors which led to goals, conceding 54 goals in the league. For a player with 275 appearances at United in the league, 100 clean sheets and making just 10 errors which led to goals since the 2011/12 season, the past season has been the worst at United for the Spaniard.

Donnarumma will be a gamble for United, but looking back to the 2011/12 season, De Gea was a gamble too. The 20-year-old has played as the number one at Milan for four seasons now, playing 164 matches, which for a player of his age is remarkable. It is clear that he has the ability to be a great goalkeeper in the future. He has also played 12 times for Italy but has not become a regular for his country, which might be a worry or a blessing.

If Milan did opt to sell Donnarumma, they could utilise Pepe Reina, the backup goalkeeper as the number one, promoting 19-year-old Alessandro Plizzari, who has potential in the game and could perhaps surpass Donnarumma. His older brother, Antonio Donnarumma also plays for Milan, so they are not short of goalkeepers.

Selling Donnarumma would take a bit of financial burden off the club as the player is one of the high earners at the San Siro and they have many players, which may also be offloaded. It is suggested that Donnarumma could be available for a fee of around £53 million which when you consider that Liverpool signed Alisson for £66.9 million and Chelsea signed Kepa Arrizabalaga for £71.6 million the potential signing of Donnarumma could be seen as a bargain, despite it being more than the £18.9 million spent on De Gea eight years ago.
