Since the arrival of new manager Jose Mourinho, Manchester United have been linked with quite a few players. One of them players being 22-year-old German midfielder Julian Draxler who currently plays for VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga. It’s now being reported that Manchester United have made a bid of £30 million for Draxler. With him apparently being a backup plan should Manchester United fail in the pursuit to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Borussia Dortmund. Draxler joined Wolfsburg in August 2015 from Schalke 04, he has had a fairly good season scoring eight goals and assisting in a further eight in 31 appearances in all competitions this season. He also made four appearances for Schalke before he left, scoring one goal. He suffered an injury towards the end of the 2015/16 season which kept him out for a month from the middle of April until the last game of the season.
Before joining Wolfsburg, Draxler was also a target for Arsenal among other clubs. The midfielder put in promising displays for Schalke and showed great potential. Still only 22 years old, many feel that Draxler hasn’t reached his full potential yet and that he still has a lot more to offer. When watching him play I have been impressed. He is a very versatile player, being able to play on either wing as well as the number 10 role. Overall I feel he is a good player that can still improve massively. Draxler is currently with the German national team at Euro 2016. He was also a part of the German World Cup winning squad in 2014. So far for Germany, he has made 21 appearances scoring one goal and assisting in a further two.
Manchester United definitely appear to be looking to bring in a wide attacking midfielder this summer with bids made for both Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Julian Draxler. However, Mkhitaryan is seen as the first choice for Manchester United and they are hoping a deal for the Borussia Dortmund player will go through. Julian Draxler is a good alternative to have, should a deal for Mkhitaryan not go through. However, Wolfsburg could be reluctant to sell the 22-year-old with him only joining them last summer. They may also look to get more than £30 million for Draxler should they let him leave, with them paying around £25.5 million for the young playmaker and him still having around four years left to run on his five-year contract that he signed when he joined the club in 2015.
I personally think that Draxler would be a good signing for Manchester United. He is a player that can improve massively and being so versatile he offers back up in a number of positions in the attacking third whether this be on the wing or through the middle as a number 10 should someone get injured. Will we see Draxler in a Manchester United shirt next season? We will have to wait and see.
