Manchester United fans struck with Anthony Martial-mania

“Welcome to Manchester United, Anthony Martial!” bellowed Martin Tyler as Anthony Martial had just given United a 3-1 win over Liverpool and practically ended Martin Skrtel’s career in England. Since that moment, United fans fell in love with the Frenchman.

Originally brought in as a striker under Louis van Gaal, Martial also spent time on the left-wing after the emergence of Marcus Rashford – who now competes for that position with Martial. In particular, this season, the battle between Martial and Rashford for that left win position is interesting. They seem to be motivating each other to play better. Trying to keep Marcus Rashford quiet is hard enough but then having to deal with Anthony Martial, fresh off the bench is a whole other ball game. I couldn’t think of anything worse for a right-back.

Last season was a tough one for Martial. He seemed to have problems with his ex-girlfriend off the pitch, and on the pitch, he wasn’t the same player as the one in Louis van Gaal’s final season. The confidence had gone, he looked scared to make a mistake. However, this season, the young French prodigy has been a sensation, almost like a new signing. Whenever he gets the ball now there’s a sense of anticipation that something is going to happen.

The Frenchman’s performances this season, in particular against Burton in the Carabao Cup and CSKA Moscow in the Champions League, have left United fans purring. His ability to beat a man is unbelievable, and his close control is exquisite. There’s a correlation to when Cristiano Ronaldo was at the club and a sense of expectation that the forward will deliver.

Mourinho’s men have been electric to watch this season, in particular going forward and Martial has been a key component of that. The way Mourinho has managed the young man has been impeccable and this season, I feel that the Frenchman is on the verge of taking his game up to the next level.

It seems the Old Trafford faithful feel as though Martial can go as far as he wants to in the game, I certainly think so. The boy possesses all the qualities to be a world-class player someday. Fellow MUFC Latest writer, Dermot Brogan, shared his views about Martial. Here’s what he had to say;

“Martial has been one of my favourite players since he joined us for the club. From his first appearance and goal v Liverpool, he has captured the imagination of our fans. Despite enduring a disappointing season last year due to personal issues, it looks like he has regained his confidence and is now enjoying his football more than ever. The battle between him and Rashford will be an intriguing one.”

I have to agree with what Dermot has said, Martial seems to be enjoying his football again, and the battle between Rashford and Martial is a healthy one to have in the squad. I can’t help but love him after that Liverpool goal too!

In all honesty, I have enjoyed watching Martial this season so far. I hope he can continue this run of form for as long as possible and nothing distracts him off the pitch in his personal life. If he continues this run of form then surely an international recall for France is not out of the realm of possibility, especially as it is a World Cup year. United’s no.11 will certainly have his sights set on that.

As we like to sing at Old Trafford;

“Fifty million down the drain, as Tony Martial scores again.”
