Manchester United has shown interest in Davide Calabria after scouting 22-year-old AC Milan right-back

Manchester United hold an interest in AC Milan right-back Davide Calabria after reports materialised suggesting that the Old Trafford club has scouted the 22-year-old this season. It is expected that club captain, Antonio Valencia will be leaving the Theatre of Dreams this summer, ten years after he arrived, which was also the season Cristiano Ronaldo left.

United signed 19-year-old right-back Diogo Dalot last summer but it would seem that the club are seeking a replacement for Valencia, which would not only add competition for Dalot but competition also, which could bring out the best of both players. A team as big as United should have players who specialise in their positions.

Obviously, this does not mean that Calabria will sign for the Old Trafford club as he is just a player, in this position, who is on the list of players to be scouted ahead of the summer, which suggests that Ed Woodward and the club owners, the Glazer family, will be looking to spend money in areas the club needs to strengthen, which is what is needed.

Calabria has played 27 times for Milan this season, playing in the Serie A, UEFA Europa League, the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana. The 22-year-old has scored one goal and one assist, predominantly playing as a right-back, although he had also played as a right-defensive midfielder and even as a central midfielder.

United caretaker manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has previously talked about transfer plans this summer amid indications that he is going to be the permanent successor of Jose Mourinho, who was sacked by the club in December. Solskjaer has also suggested that a team such as United does not need superstar signings, seemingly entrusting youth.

United, over a period of many years, had always invested in youth, whether from within their own academy or from other clubs. Solskjaer will be seeking to restart that, especially after a number of young and talented players has been scouted already and probably more on the horizon over the next few months.
