Manchester United in the lead to sign Bruno Fernandes as Portuguese media reports ‘large steps’ taken in transfer saga

The Bruno Fernandes transfer saga is still rumbling on in the background with yet more speculation about the player’s transfer to the Premier League. Four Portuguese newspapers have all reported things about the Sporting Lisbon midfielder on Thursday with previous reports suggesting that the deal could be done by the end of this week or the start of next.

Correio da Manhã and Record have both reported quotes from Sporting manager Marcelo Keizer, who has apparently said that “it will be hard for Bruno to stay” and that he knows that he could lose the clubs top scorer from last season. It has also been suggested by Record that Manchester United currently leads the race for the player, despite not putting in an official offer for the 24-year-old.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side is trailed by Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan, although the latter will probably offer to take the player on loan, paying for him in instalments like the player is something purchased from a catalogue, as seems to be the case with the clubs pursuit of Romelu Lukaku this summer.

Jornal de Notícias has reported a new approach from UEFA Champions League winners Liverpool which will probably make both United and Spurs act in the market, if they are both hotly interested in the player, like the reports from Portugal have been suggesting for a number of weeks now, otherwise, Liverpool could become the frontrunners.

It has been stated that much like United and Spurs, Liverpool is not willing to match Sporting’s valuation of €70 million for the player this summer, so it might just mean that everything goes back to the drawing board if this transfer is to sprout legs and actually happen this summer, or keep creating column inches in the media in Portugal and beyond.

The fourth newspaper in Portugal to report something today was A Bola – the ones who firmly believe that a transfer to the Premier League could be completed soon. Fernandes is supposed to meet with the Sporting squad next week to start pre-season training – he is currently in Dubai on holiday. However, there is a chance that he might not need to as he might be a player of another club by this time – if these reports are correct.

The newspaper has continued to report that the player’s agent, Miguel Pinho has been in contact with United and Spurs, who are both seemingly offering Sporting €55 million for Fernandes and they will not raise their offer. Despite this not being all that close to the €70 million that Sporting wants to receive for the 24-year-old. However, A Bola suggests that ‘large steps’ have been taken and that ‘everything should be decided this week’.

I wish I could believe the Portuguese media. Sport Witness has previously suggested that they might well be one of the most reliable countries for transfer news, a lot better than the English media, who make a lot of things up or take reports from elsewhere and add some more ‘insight’ or something like that. A Bola seems to be confident of something happening this week, with just one more day after today, unless they include the weekend.

It would seem that this is going to be between United and Spurs, although Liverpool seems to be hanging in there, just in case something happens that means both United and Spurs rule themselves out of the transfer. United seems to be the team in the lead at present, however, things like this can change quickly. It was stated nearly a week ago that Solskjaer has issued a deadline, of the 1 July – so I guess we shall just wait and see what happens.
