Manchester United began the U15 Nike Premier Cup with mixed results on the opening day as they lost the first game before bouncing back to win their second game. United’s squad includes a number of trialists who supplement a young United squad who disappointed at the Marveld tournament.
Heavy rain at the AON Training Complex lead to difficult conditions for the youngsters as they were beaten by a late winner by Dutch side Feyenoord losing 1-0. 14-year-old goalkeeper matt Campbell followed up his impressive showing at the Marveld tournament with a string of saves to keep United in the game before eventually being beaten from close range by Choukoud from close range. Feyenoord restricted United to long-range efforts with 13-year-old Angel Gomes trying his luck from 45 yards out but he was off target as the youngsters began the tournament with a loss.
United didn’t have long to think about their defeat as they were in action again an hour later taking on South African team Mamelodi Sundowns and this time it was United who won it late on as Ashley Maddocks on trial from Walsall headed in a late winner.
George Tanner had united’s best effort of the first half but his effort flew narrowly over while at the other end Campbell was again impressive making a couple of saves. The game looked to be heading for a draw before late pressure from United lead to Maddocks heading home from Faustin Makela’s accurate cross.
