Manchester United in the verge of their first new signing ahead of the summer – reports

Manchester United are said to be ‘on the verge’ of securing the services of 19-year-old George Hirst ahead of the summer transfer window. It has been reported that United have beaten Premier League rivals to the signature of Hirst, who currently plays for Sheffield Wednesday. The 19-year-old attracted the attention of many top-flight clubs after impressing for England at youth international level.

Hurst has been impressing this season and has emerged as one of England’s top youth prospects and did help the country win the Toulon tournament in France last summer. The Mirror reported that Leicester City were seeking to sign Hirst this summer but it is United who are in pole position for the forward, which will continue the overhaul of the clubs Academy, which has worked wonders at the various youth levels under Nicky Butt over the past few years with just the U23’s needing some improvement.

Hirst, the son of Owls legend David Hirst is out of contract this summer, meaning United would not have to pay a fee for his services, just compensation based on the footballing education the player has utilised whilst at the Sheffield club. This season, Hirst has not played for the first team at Hillsborough and has so far refused to sign a new long-term contract. Owls chief Dejphon Chansiri, who was speaking about Hirst just last month, said:

“I still hope that he will sign. Let’s see what happens. I can’t make a decision. I told him he has a big chance [here].”

It could be a big blow for Sheffield Wednesday is Hirst does leave the club. I don’t think he will be a player that will be considered for the first team next season, but to play at U23 level, which will hone his skills and hopefully see an out-and-out striker play at that level, which is something that has been missing from the club at this level for a while now. James Wilson did play as the striker earlier in the season at this level.

This shows that Butt has done the right things with the Academy, sorting out the lower levels first, which in turn will benefit the higher levels. The U18’s seem to be on the cusp of winning the U18 Premier League North this season, sitting ten points clear of second-placed Liverpool at this time, although Manchester City have a few games in hand and they are the only club that could catch United.

However, if they fail to win one of those catchup matches this week, United could clinch the title with a win over their local rivals at Leigh Sports Village at noon on Saturday 14th April 2018, which really would be something to mock Manchester City for, who had the chance to clinch the Premier League title against United at the Etihad on Saturday, scoring twice in the first half and dominating, but conceding three goals in the second half, losing the match 3-2.
