Manchester United interested in replacing Anthony Martial with Lucas Vazquez this summer

Manchester United are reportedly set to launch a raid on Real Madrid for winger Lucas Vazquez. It is reported that the Spanish international is worried about his future at the club after Julen Lopetegui replaced Zinedine Zidane as the manager of the club this summer, which forced his sacking two days before Spain were due to face Portugal in the first group stage match of the FIFA World Cup this summer. Incidentally, Spain were knocked out of the tournament by host nation Russia, on penalties, on Sunday afternoon.

Real Madrid mouthpiece Marca has reported that United are at the front of the queue for Vazquez this summer as he is seen as a potential replacement for Anthony Martial, who through his agent has expressed his wish to leave the Old Trafford club, rather than to actually fight for his future at the club, which is very telling in the mentality of the player. His supporters, known as Martial FC will blame the fact that the player wants to leave on Jose Mourinho, who has rightfully not picked him for many matches this season, scoring once since January.

If a player is not going to show any fight and feels that he should be picked over everyone else because his fans tell him that he is the best and that he should not need to beat anyone to contention for a starting place, that player is better off away from Old Trafford. If you are not prepared to fight for your place in the team, why should you be given a chance to fight for the team. His performance against Chelsea in the Emirates FA Cup final was telling to his mentality – not playing well, in the slightest and not performing to the expectations required to play for United.

Liverpool and Arsenal are also said to be interested in Vazquez, who will soon be heading home from Russia so a potential move could be sorted out quite quickly. Real Madrid, however, do not seem all that keen to sell the player, who made 49 appearances for the club last season which ended with them lifting the UEFA Champions League for the fourth time in five years. Vazquez, who turned 27 on Sunday, scored nine goals, adding a further nine assists to his tally last season, which shows what he is capable of.

During the FIFA World Cup for Spain, the 27-year-old played twice, for 84 minutes in total, playing four minutes in the 3-3 draw against Portugal more than a fortnight ago, also playing 80 minutes in the 1-0 victory over Iran. However, the Spanish international did not score or assist in the competition. Vazquez is a strong passer of the ball, has an eye for a key pass, is a good dribbler, a holder of the ball, good at taking free-kicks and adds defensive contribution to his game. His aerial duels could be problematic, but United has plenty of cover in that area.
