Manchester United launch €40 million bid for Dinamo Zagreb’s Spain U21 winger Dani Olmo – reports

Manchester United has reportedly launched a €40 million bid to sign Dinamo Zagreb winger Dani Olmo this summer. The 21-year-old was in great form in Croatia last season and ended up being awarded the Croatian Player of the Year award. The reports come from Croatian newspaper, Sportske Novosti.

During the past season, the 21-year-old made a total of 44 appearances, scoring 12 goals, assisting a further nine goals – playing a total of 3,301 minutes of football. Olmo is an attacking midfielder who can play on either wing, also playing in a central attacking role, and has even been played as a central midfielder.

The Spanish youth international was recently in the Spain U21 squad which won the UEFA U21 European Championships in Italy and San Marino. Olmo played in four of the five matches Spain played, scoring three goals, including what became the winner against Germany in the final. Against Poland, France and Germany he played as a right-winger but against Belgium, he played behind the striker.

For his performance against Germany in the final, Olmo was named the Man of the Match, which will show the type of match he played for his country. United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to have launched a bid for the talented player before clubs from around Europe are vying to sign the player. The €40 million bid, which is around £36 million, came from reports in Croatia and it would make Olmo the most expensive player at the Croatian club.

Dinamo Zagreb has a history of producing top class talent over the years with Luka Modric and Mario Mandzukic both coming from the Croatian club. Olmo left Barcelona’s La Masia academy in the summer of 2014 as he felt his development would be better elsewhere. That seems to have been the case as the player is clearly on the route to becoming a special player.

Solskjaer has signed Daniel James already this summer, a winger who favours the left flank. The right wing is a position that needs to be strengthened as United does not have a player capable of performing in this area for a number of years now. Solskjaer must have seen the position needed to be strengthened with a player capable of adding speed and presicion on the flank.
