Manchester United linked to talented Fiorentina star Federico Chiesa

Manchester United have been linked to many players already this summer with Diogo Dalot and Fred both heading to the Theatre of Dreams ahead of the new season. Jose Mourinho has a long list of things that he needs to improve at the club this summer and a few positions to fill, which should help fix the problems that have arisen under his tenure at the club. One problem that has been prevalent for the past few seasons is the right-wing position with many players tested, none making the position their own at the club.

United have been linked to Fiorentina midfielder Federico Chiesa by Gazzetta dello Sport, reported in the United Kingdom by The Metro. Chiesa, 20 has seen his stock rise at the club over the last year after a string of performances which has seen the liked of United, Liverpool, and Manchester City be credited with an interest in the player. Chiesa played 38 times for his club last season, starting 35 times in Serie A, plus an appearance from the bench, also starting twice in the Coppa Italia. He scored a total of six goals, assisting five more (all in Serie A).

Back in April, Fiorentina suggested they would allow Chiesa to leave the club if their £44 million valuation was met, which is perhaps a high fee for a player of his age, but when you look at comparable players in European football, it would seem to be a good figure for any club to do business this summer. The summer transfer window is in its early stage, despite the FIFA World Cup and the fact the window will shut for Premier League clubs on the 9th August, Fiorentina, after seeing more interest emerge, have increased the selling fee of their player.

Now, if a club is interested in signing Chiesa, they will need to cough up £62 million for the player, which in effect means that only a number of clubs could possibly afford that fee, which could also see others, who had an interest in the player, seemingly walk away from making an offer. It is unknown as to whether United’s interest in the 20-year-old is real but since they signed Dalot from FC Porto, younger players have been linked to United, when the media seemed to link them previously to more experienced players earlier in the summer.

Chiesa can play in a number of midfield positions, but during the past season, 18 of his 36 appearances in Serie A alone were spent in a variation of positions on the right and it is stated that his favoured position is as a right-winger, which is where you see just where he could fit in, should United, of course, be interested and agree a suitable fee for the player. Chiesa is a great dribbler of the ball, however, his tackling, passing and ability to duel in the air is a weakness, something he could, of course, work on in the future.

The 20-year-old’s style of play includes his like for cutting inside, his ability to dribble, the effective short passes he plays, however, he gets fouled often and commits fouls often, which again is something he could work on himself, or could work with teammates to make him more effective when in possession of the ball. Liverpool and United are in need of attacking reinforcements this summer and with the Nabil Fekir deal collapsing last week, Chiesa could be an option, although the fee could be the barrier in a potential deal, for both clubs.
