Manchester United linked with another Brazilian with Douglas Costa now on Jose Mourinho’s radar

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly ready to make a move for Bayern Munich winger Douglas Costa. The 29-year-old Brazilian has been on loan at Juventus where he helped the Italian side lift the Serie A title. It is suggested that Costa could move to the Old Lady for around £35 million this summer, taking up the option to sign him permanently under the agreement which was set when the player was loaned to Juventus.

Italian daily, Corriere dello Sport, reported by The Sun in the United Kingdom, suggest that Costa is a target for United as Mourinho looks to strengthen the attacking talent he has at his disposal. The former Shakhtar Donetsk winger signed for Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich for just £26 million in 2015 but failed to find his feet at the club, lacking the ability to force himself into the starting XI consistently. The loan spell came after he pushed for a move away from the Allianz Arena.

Since signing for Juventus, on loan, Costa thrived under Massimilaino Allegri in Italy and helped Juventus to a domestic double in his first season at the club. Obviously, the Bayern hierarchy did not think Costa was destined to succeed in the Bundesliga, the loan spell had a clause to sign the player permanently, which is what Juventus could do this summer, giving Bayern the initial amount spent on the player three years ago, plus a small profit.

However, the report states that United are interested in the player, therefore are willing to pay a hefty amount to sign him. I find the £75 million fee assigned to the article as questionable. Surely, if United wanted the player, they could start at a smaller figure, closer to the value of the clause in the loan spell agreement, whether it is something that could be cancelled by Bayern in order to sell the player to another club. Obviously, if this cannot be cancelled, Juventus could purchase the player and sell him themselves for a tidy profit.

Costa played 47 times for Juventus this season, scoring six times and assisting a further 14 goals. Not the best performance and surely not one which would be worth £75 million. United, however, do need a player to play in the right-wing position, something which has been lacking since the days of Louis van Gaal when he was trying to sign Pedro from Barcelona, for United to back out of the deal and see Chelsea sign him.

Jose Mourinho once spoke about Brazilian players needing to be a part of Manchester United, not that they have succeeding when they have played for the club, but this seems to have given the media a focal point this summer with Brazilian after Brazilian being linked to the Old Trafford club. United seem likely to sign Fred this summer and Alex Sandro has been linked to the club for some time now, whether that deal materialises remains to be seen though.

I don’t see much in this report at this moment in time, which I am sure you can guess from the comments I have made. However, Costa is a player who has been linked to United before, many supporters wanted him at a point but now, in the twilight of his career, is it time for him to play at the Theatre of Dreams. I am less than convinced.
