As the January transfer window draws closer, the rumor mill is now in full flow with Manchester United being linked to some of world football’s most wanted talents. In new speculation the Manchester Evening News cited articles linking United with three German players all of whom were part of Germany’s preliminary World Cup squad. Marco Reus, Christoph Kramer and Benedikt Höwedes have all been touted to be on the move in January and if media reports are to be believed are targets for United.
Marco Reus is obviously the most high-profile of those players and though United fans would love to seem him pull on the red shirt, it is highly unlikely that we will be seeing the talented German winger anywhere in the Premier League. The Daily star believes that Marco Reus, who is also supposedly a target for Arsenal and Liverpool prefers to move to Spain with Real Madrid favorites for his signature. The Daily Star quote apparent ‘well-respected’ FIFA agent Francois Gallardo as saying:
“Real Madrid will sign Reus and operation will close within days.It is a very important player, if it comes to Real Madrid would be the icing for long-term project.”
Benedikt Höwedes is also being linked with a move away from his boyhood club Schalke, with the center back said to be looking for a “new adventure”. With defensive injuries piling up at Old Trafford, the news papers wasted no time linking the experienced center back with a move to United. He was quoted in the BILD as saying:
“At Schalke I’m fine, but maybe at some point I might feel tempted for something new. This is not to say that I will go in January or next summer.”
This move could be looked at as a cheaper and easier alternative to fellow German Mats Hummels another of United’s long term defensive targets. As per WhoScored.com Höwedes has a higher rate of interceptions and clearances per game than Hummels and has been performing consistently for club and country over the past few seasons. Despite this, it is highly unlikely that United will move for the Höwedes if Hummels were to become available in the near future.
Louis Van Gaal is known to regret letting go of Hummels when he was in charge at Bayern and may look to be reunited with the center half, a player who fits the profile of a “Van Gaal center back” one who is comfortable on the ball and can build attacks from the back.
The last of the German trio is midfielder Christoph Kramer. The hardworking defensive midfielder currently plays for Borussia Mönchengladbach, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen. According to talkSPORT, Real Madrid and Manchester United are both interested in the tough tackling German. The player has been linked to a host of european powerhouses in the German media but United and Real are thought to be willing to pay £8million to acquire the services of the World Cup winning midfielder.
With United thought to be in hot pursuit of Kevin Strootman, another Van Gaal favorite, it is unlikely we will be seeing a move for Kramer in the near future. Louis Van Gaal trusts Strootman and even commented in pre season that he would look at how Strootman recovers from injury before assessing whether to move for him.
United fans are used to being linked with every player on the planet as the transfer windows draw closer. Though United will be looking to strengthen in the coming months it is unlikely that we will see any of these players lining up for Louis Van Gaal’s side anytime soon.
