Manchester United make £30 million bid for Nelson Semedo – reports

Nelson Semedo in among a very large number of players who have been linked to Manchester United this summer, and you can see just why. The right-back position at the Old Trafford club needs some depth if United are to compete in the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and the two domestic competitions next season. Antonio Valencia is a player who has improved over the last season, making the position his own but a bit of competition will go a long way in United not only getting the best out of players but sorting out a replacement for when the Ecuadorian does actually hang up his boots. United are not the only reported team interested in the Benfica defender with both Barcelona and Bayern Munich interested with the Catalan club looking at Semedo should they fail in a bid to lure Hector Bellerin from Arsenal this summer.

What is being reported and by who?

The Mirror reported on Monday that Manchester United had bid £30 million for Semedo in an attempt to beat Barcelona to the player. The story in the newspaper did not suggest where this report came from, which leaves me suspicious as if they were reporting from other news elsewhere around Europe, the source should at least be linked or mentioned. On Wednesday The ever-reliable newspaper The Sun arrived at the party suggesting details of the £30 million bid for the defender. Again no information about the bid comes through the report with Football Whispers writing a report on the player, which is helpful but I see claims made which have not been corroborated. On Tuesday, The Mirror had another report which talked about Semedo ahead of a potential move to Manchester United. Because of the choice of words used and the fact the claims made have not been backed up, I would suggest this is a mere rumour unless more details come out in the coming days or weeks.

What type of player is Nelson Semedo?

Nelson Semedo is a defender who plays to his potential in the right-back position, a position Manchester United do not need a main player for with the resurgence of Antonio Valencia but signing a replacement for him will severely strengthen United, it will also put less pressure on the Ecuadorian. Semedo made 46 appearances for Benfica last season, becoming somewhat of a mainstay in the first team there after problems in his journey through the ranks at the Portuguese club. Semedo is also part of the Portugal squad, gaining some important experience at international level, which will help in his development. Semedo has been likened to former Barcelona and Brazil right-back Dani Alves, which is a great compliment, something which may be too soon, but if his development continues, he could be a mainstay in any team, which could be a reason why United have been credited with an interest in the player, despite it not being corroborated.

Likelihood of the transfer?

The fact that there are some reports out there from major newspapers who do not state where the information surrounding this rumour has come from, it would suggest that there is nothing going on right now, or the reports come from a foreign website which is not all that credible. The fact that Semedo is a Benfica player is also something to think about as we have seen Anderson Talisca linked, which seems to be something that has become nothing, and now Semedo, which could be more of the same. United and Benfica have been linked many times before. Only a few years ago Nicolas Gaitan was linked to the club near enough every transfer window with no solid interest coming from the Old Trafford club and the player leaving for Atletico Madrid. There could be something going on here though, you never know as United will not always brief the media of every transfer move they make. There could also be nothing going on. Barcelona seems to be interested in the player in a bid to strengthen their defence next season, which could be a likely move for the player. We shall see what develops on this rumour, possibly nothing.
